Nest Hello Doorbell in Australia - What Works?

Hi all,

I am looking at purchasing a Nest Hello doorbell and having it forwarded to Australia.

Has anyone managed to get one and set it up correctly? The main reason I want to do this is for the Nest Hub/Nest Mini chime integration, and because it has the ability to pop up the video feed automatically onto the Hubs. (I work from home now at the back of the house, so this feature on the Nest Hub in my office would be perfect)

Can someone clarify the following?

  • Does it work?
Being in Australia where the product isn't officially available, can it even be setup here in Australia?

  • Latency
How is the latency for the Nest Hello? I am unsure if this product is supported on Google's Australian servers, do you get a delay for mobile/speaker notification?

  • Subscription Fees
It is my understanding that the subscription fee is only for face recognition, is this correct?

  • Cloud Storage
This isn't really important as I have an 8ch NVR w/ 6MP Camera's anyway but how does the subscription work? is there a free plan and paid plan? Is any storage included without paying?

  • Power
What did you do for power? I assume the transformer will be 120v, so what voltage does the doorbell itself require to function?

Any info is highly appreciated.

Thanks,

    • Yes it does work in Australia, I bought mine and set it up and all features work including all nest aware features.

    • There is a 3 to 5 second delay from when you press the doorbell to when you get a notification on your phone and on the home devices. There's a small latency with conversations, nothing huge works pretty well most of the time. Similar to an overseas call really.

    • You need to have a nest aware subscription for facial recognition and video history storage. They have different plans depending on your needs.

    • No storage included for free. You can use the nest public video link to record the stream using a PC software NVR like Blur Iris, but I dont think it would be possible with a dedicated NVR like your system.

    • You will need to buy a 24v AC power supply for the unit. Jaycar sell one

Lots of information and help for Australian needs can be found in the Whirlpool Thread

No problems. IMO paying for the nest aware is worth it to get the facial recognition option. Having my google homes say "Adam is at the front door" is awesome and is one of the main options that set the Nest apart from other makes.

    • With the Public Video Link do you know if I can access the feed directly over the LAN via IP Address? Or is it always over video.nest.com? There seems to be 3 different options on their site to try, but they do not have a technical explanation.

I could add this as a camera to my Dahua NVR if it supports an RTSP stream (preferably directly over LAN)

I'm not sure on it completely.. but on my blue iris system, I have the video.nest.com link as my address and the setting is set to RTMPS via public page. To get it to work.

Check eBay USA, if you can get one for a decent price shipped. It ends up being about as good as the very rare sales we see in them over here.

I've only ever seen one decent deal in the last 2 years for these.
