New Xbox One S Died after 5 Months. Is This Console Known to Have a Short Life Span?

Hello All,

I bought a new XBox One S from EB Games on March 2020. A few days ago I was playing Metal Gear Solid V and to my surprise there was an electric arc coming from the back of the console. The XBox died and won't turn on.

I contacted EB Games to see what remedy they can offer. They asked me to ship the console to them so they can check what's wrong with it and they'll go from there. They provided an Australia Post label so I can send free of charge.

Another thing I did was I registered my console's serial number to Microsoft account as it is still under warranty. I thought it is better to have Microsoft look at it since they will know their product better and have the parts. I will send the console to Microsoft later.

Can anybody comment on the quality and reliability of the XBox One S ? Is it known to have a short life span? Is my experience just a one off?

I'd return it to MS rather than Ebgames. Much better warranty experience from my experience.

Our xbox has been going strong but have been going thru elite controllers …

    • I think I have gone through about 8 elite controllers (2 original purchases, the rest have all been warranty replacements) and still have my original Titanfall 1 edition xBox One.

    • Is scuf better than the elite controller?

I’ve had my Xbox for nearly 2 years and haven’t had to replace the Xbox nor the controllers so I’d make a warranty claim if I were you.

They definitely last more than a few months. You just got unlucky
The last console to have a fundamental flaw and high failure rate was the original Xbox 360 which developed the infamous "red ring of death"
If the Xbox One S had a widespread hardware issue, it would be known by now

Is This Console Known to Have a Short Life Span?

This is just an absurd conclusion.

No it's not normal mine has been running fine for years, even my OG XB1 is still running from 2014, contact MS support they should be able to help you out.

Yes, you should have bought a PS4.

I've lost my PS4 saves twice from fatal errors require a system restore. Some individual consoles are just duds.

Is it known to have a short life span?

Yea, only usually lasts 4-6 weeks…

Is my experience just a one off?

Definitely not. An an electric arc coming from the back of the console is a feature. /s

    • I bought a video game console not a spark plug….Some of these extra features are destructive…

I also think you were unlucky, I had my One S for maybe one year and a half until I swapped for the One X (none of them presented issues).
I have also been lucky with my PS4 and was able to swap for the PS4 Pro after the same amount of time, they tend to get hotter than the xbox but this would be another topic.

Have had my One S since 2017 (Late 2016) and have had no issues. My gaming schedule is pretty erratic, there have been months when I haven't touched it and others when I play 4-5 hours per day. But for the most part I have not heard of any One S issues.

To that note I had the original Xbox One from 2014 until I got my One S and I played for hours a day on that too, didn't have any issues.

However I will mention that my friend who bought a One S with me had an issue on his where it would turn off when it got ten minutes into a game. We both ordered them from MS online and he asked if he could return it to the physical store in Sydney and they said yeah sure. They gave him a new sealed box on the spot and he even told them he used the Battlefield 1 and Xbox live codes and they said it's fine, he got a second set of those for free.

I'd say you have a faulty console rather than a known issue in the One S and yeah I'd fully recommend MS over eb any day of the week. They replaced an elite controller for me on the spot because I felt like the analogs were lose.

  • electric arc coming from the back

What do you mean with electric arc?

    • Electric spark

As said above. Skip EB and go to MS. If you registered it, the website will say that it is still under warranty.
Once you log it with them they will send all the details to who to send to. I have had my Xbox One S die that was purchased from Amazon. Skipped them and went to MS. Swapped over immediately. Good experience.

I had an issue with my xbox after 9 months and eb got me to bring in just the console with proof of purchase and they swapped it over for me on the spot.

Id go the maunfacturers route. You're not obligated to. Either or. Ms would more than likely replace it straight up.

I think you were just unlucky. Unlike the 360, the build quality of the one is pretty good from personal experience
