AC Powered Smoke Alarm Chirping Even after New Battery (Legrand Cat 643 085)

Guys, Searched online, could not find proper solution.

It is more than 2 years since I moved to this new house. So I wanted to replace batteries for all (4) smoke alarms though they are still working fine and no issues at all.
So I replaced 2 alarms without any issues. The problem is for remaining 2, they are chirping every minute after new battery. The weird thing is - If I replace with old batteries then they are working fine. I don't think there is any problem with new batteries because I tried two different brands.

Should I continue with old batteries ? OR Is there anything I'm missing ? Can't find reset button anywhere.
( I could not find any such trouble shoot in user manual/online)

Much appreciate your time.

  • Have you tried blowing compressed air into it? It could be a buildup of dust and the jet of air will clear it out.

    • I will try cleaning as you mentioned. But why is it still working for old batteries and why not for new batteries.

  • Take them down, take out battery. Then hold test button down for 30 seconds to clear fault code. Replace battery and secure to ceiling. If it chirps again wait 15 minutes to see if it stops.
    If not replace alarm.

    • ^ +1 gotta wait
If you know for sure the batteries are new, it will stop beeping eventually.

    • You mean just opening cover plate of the alarm OR removing entire unit from ceiling ? Can we do that ? Can you guide me how to pull out unit ?

I have only opened cover plate and replaced battery by using ladder. Replacing alarm is costly affair for me due to electrician call out.

      • Remove it from ceiling, it either slides away or twists.

  • How old is the dwelling? Are the smoke alarms as old as the house?

I had similar experience. 15 year old smoke detectors started giving random grief.

Purchased / installed mains powered replacements and not a problem since.

    $22 bucks each at bunnings.

Dwelling & smoke alarm are 2 yrs old. Buying alarm is cheaper but electrician call out is a blow for my pocket. If it is not working at all then I will go to that step but it is working fine for old batteries.
