Second Monitor for iMac 27" 5k

Hi guys,

I am after a second monitor for my 27" 5k iMac. Preferably 27 IPS panel, cause I looked at a Samsung 4k TN and the viewing angles were horrible.
Mostly used for photo and video editing.
Not sure if the FHD would look weird as I am used to look at the Imac all day
I saw this one https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/dell-27-inches-fhd-monitor-se… but it only 1080

Any suggestions?
Budget around 400/500AUD
Thanks

  • The 5k iMac screen is a 5120x2880 panel which makes it a little tricky to pair with another monitor. 4k at 27 inches will probably look a little off next to your iMac. With your budget you can get 2560x1440 (QHD/WQHD) panels at 27" or drop down to a 4k 24" panel if you want to retain a retina resolution.

    • thanks,
I just need something that will not look weird next to it. The 24" I think will look pretty bad size wise… Thanks for the insight

    • +1

Highly doubt at that viewing distance you'd see a large if any difference between the two in terms of pixel density

      • Depends on how good your eyes are and what content you're comparing. If you're putting them side by side, there's a noticeable difference with text and interface elements, but not as much for images. For a secondary screen, I think 4K 27" (with 1.5 scaling/2560x1440 equivalent space) next to an iMac is fine.

      • ~220PPI versus ~165PPI is about a 10cm difference in optimal viewing distance. I don't know that I'd notice the difference standalone but OP's going to be running the panels side by side, and presumably one of them is going to be doing scaled rendering so that physical window size remains constant between the two. Add that they're going to be doing photo/video editing and so are probably a pixel peeper, and I don't think it's over the top to suggest that it'll probably look a little off to them. (To be clear: by little off, I don't mean terrible, just a little off.)

  • how do you connect to the MAC - it doesn't have a HDMI port, so you will need some adapter ?

    • i have an hdmi to usbc adaptor
