How Much to Spend on Office Laptop? Must Have Number Pad

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for guidance on a relatively powerful laptop for my Dad. Although he predominantly uses excel/browser a few softwares with large databases require a bit more power (takes a long time to load on slower laptops).

I would have gone for the xps13/15 but he needs a number pad.

His last laptop was an Asus which had the latest i7 and 16gb of ram (and decent SSD storage). It served him well but it has now started to show signs of slowing down.

I don't think he needs a laptop with a dedicated graphics card? His workstation is a simple duel 24inch 1080p setup.

The laptop also has to be reliable with good build quality. Any pointers? Thanks.

Please note that the number pad is a must.

would you consider a USB Numpad as an add-on?

    • good point

    • Considered it but I'm sure there are plenty of good laptops that have a number pad. Having an additional accessory takes away from the convenience/portability of a laptop.

      • Out of interest why is the number pad essential? I used to work at an audit firm and loads of people used to buy USB number pads for their laptops. I have always preferred using the ones at the top of the keyboard.

  • even decent desktop takes long time to load large excel files.
I don't know how huge files you're going to use, you really need to spend big money to buy to deal with huge excel file.

Just check, CPU RAM and ssd
if you choose high CPU , definitly you need to buy gaming laptop.

  • Depending on the age of the current laptop, check to see if it has an SSD - if it's still using a mechanical drive, swapping it for an SSD would boost performance significantly
