Lenovo E15 Gen 2 AMD - Laptop Reboots When Selecting Second Screen Only When Connected to External Monitor

Hi folks,

I have posted this in Lenovo's official forum and trying my luck here given that there had been so many Lenovo deals in the past few months on Ozbargain.

I am using a brand new E15 Gen 2 AMD with base specs - AMD Ryzen 5 4500U, 8 GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Windows 10 Home.

I have installed all available update for Windows and for Lenovo drivers via LenovoVantage.

BIOS Version: LENOVO R1AET31W (1.07) , 6/07/2020.

I have also set via the Windows Power and Sleep settings to DO NOTHING when Lid is Closed, etc.

The issue:

I connect the E15 to an external monitor via a Pro docking station. There is no issue when using PC Screen , Duplicate or Extend screen display settings. However, the moment I select Second Screen Only to project to the external monitor - the external monitor freezes, and the E15 reboots.
Also, when I use Duplicate mode, when I close the lid - the same thing happens - the external monitor freezes and the E15 reboots.

It feels like when the laptop display is off, the laptop reboots.

This is extremely frustrating as it means I can only use the external monitor with my laptop open, and in Duplicate mode - which means the resolution on the external monitor is poorer.

I have used the exact same docking station previously with the X250 and an E595 with zero issues- the laptop projects to the external monitor with the laptop lid closed.

Can someone please urgently advise how to resolve this issue ?

Thank you.

    via a Pro docking station

What happens when you connect monitor directly to the laptop instead of via the dock?

    • Sorry late replies.

I am trying this at home now so entirely different setup- turned on E15 , don't have mouse or keyboard connected and plugged in home monitor via HDMI.

Extend screen works. Second Screen only works.
Close lid and Second Screen only works too.

      Success!

Does this mean we have isolated the problem to be the Dock drivers ?

  • I've give it a shot later on my E15 Gen 2 - once the wife finishes work. But I don't recall experiencing any issues such as these.
Try looking for a driver or firmware update for the dock.

She is currently using with external monitor only, laptop lid closed. No issues.

      • Thanks!

Just tried this at home and it works.

Problem now is going to be how to I update drivers for the office dock.

Would that require admin passwords and all?

  • Is there a firmware update for the dock?

    • Yes both USB and mechanical. I think that's the first thing to try.

  • I had issues in the past on a Dell laptop (about 2 years ago). If I wanted to do anything graphics intensive I had to make sure the lid was up or it would go very slow.

At the time, I was told that, when the lid is closed and nothing is plugged into the video output on the laptop, it turns off the graphics card and reverts to CPU graphics.

For me this started with a windows update after I had been using it without a problem for around 6 months.

    • Hmm… That's interesting.

I connect to the dock via a USB port so won't have anything plugged into video output either .

What I can't understand is the exact same setup works perfectly with an X250 and E595.
