How to Stream Kayo?

Hey OZ,

So I’m keen to get Kayo and stream it to get rid of Foxtel.

I currently have a PS4, Smart TV (Hisense 55 p7), Switch and NBN.

What’s the best way to stream Kayo and make sure I have HD Quality.

Any help would be great.

Thank you.

Apple TV is what I use.

Your TV might have the Kayo app in the settings of the TV itself, otherwise an Apple TV works really nicely with Kayo. Make sure you have a good speed NBN connection too, otherwise works flawlessly.

    Vodafone TV - $72 delivered

Sideloading the app is easy enough. No need to spend hundreds on an Apple TV.

    • My kayo opens in weird mode i.e. landscape instead of portrait. Did you encounter similar issue? If yes any chance you can tell us how you fixed it?

      • Sorry I missed this, I don't have a clue why on the VTV it would open in anything apart from landscape mode when the VTV doesn't even have portrait mode.

Are you sure you've sideloaded the actual Android TV version of the app and not the phone version? Grab the Kayo app from here

        • Good point I will try this thanks

      • You're not mirroring your screen or something weird like that, are you?

        • Not mirroring mate

    Chromecast Ultra

  • I use either the Android TV app for the smart TV, or Apple TV box (depends on what TV I get booted onto if the wife and kids are watching something…)

  • +1 for Chromecast 3 (or Chromecast Ultra). While it is HD quality (1080p/50), it will never be as good as the quality of the Foxtel satellite/HFC feed.

  • On an old laptop I find Kayo works amazing on Chromium Edge but will freeze up (within say an hour) on Chrome.

On the same laptop I find Stan works amazing on Chrome but will freeze up (within say 1/2 hour) on Chromium Edge

    Windows 8.1 > HDMI > TV

If I was buying new I would use an Apple TV.

  • Thanks for all the feedback.
Looks like I need a Cromecast.

  • If anyone has a deal please let me know.

    • CCs rarely come on sale. I assume the profit margin on them is pretty skinny already.

Whatever you do, you're not going to get HD quality. Foxtel might call it HD, but it's low bandwidth rubbish (and I say this as a subscriber).

I'm praying they introduce 4K soon.

    • Is kayo sports 1080p for afl? I was going to pay for it for my dad.

      • It’s technically 1080p. But it’s the worst 1080p you’ve ever seen. Worse than most 720p.

People say this, but I find that watching NRL on Kayo is at least as good as channel 9 HD NRL. So if you're used to watching FTA HD, you'll be happy enough with Kayo, IMO.

It's not even close. It might be fine on a phone or a laptop, but blow it up and it's washed out, dull and clearly very low bandwidth/compression.

        • Maybe i have retarded eyes or something, but it looks fine to me on my 55" plasma.

@wombat81: You're still rocking a plasma. That's half the problem. You're running at 1/4 of the resolution compared to the rest of us.

            • @[Deactivated]: I’d still gladly take my 60” Samsung F8500 over basically anything available nowadays (especially for the price).

If the quality is so bad for you, that seems more to do with the TV you have as opposed to the service that Kayo offers for the price it is.

You’re welcome to spend many times more on full Foxtel subscription though if Kayo is so bad.

@Nousernamehere: I don't think you really understand basic television technology.

                • @[Deactivated]: That’s your argument? 😂😂😂

As I said, you’re welcome to go and spend multiple amounts of cash more for satellite Foxtel if it’s that painful for you to watch.

Works perfectly fine for the cost of the service for many of us.

                  • -2

@Nousernamehere: Yes, it's a real argument. You think a 10 year old Samsung Plasma can hold a candle to even a $1100 modern LED. You're delusional. You're not even considering the massive resolution increase, let alone all the other benefits such as HDR.

                    • +1

@[Deactivated]: Considering you don’t even know the age of the F8500 (or the quality of it) just shows you have no idea what you’re talking about. As I said, you’re welcome to spend the $59 a month for satellite Foxtel if it’s that important for you.

Absolutely laughable you think a $1100 LCD even holds a candle to the F8500 😂😂😂😂

                      • -1

@Nousernamehere: I used to own one, until it died, and Samsung replaced it with a vastly superior 4K television. You’re living in the past buddy.

                        • @[Deactivated]: You apparently had one but believe it’s 10 years old when it was released in 2013 and some LCD they replaced it with is better? Yeah, sure thing.

Enjoy the ridiculous belief that resolution is the be all and end all of the quality of a TV, you’ve just invalidated any argument you had and shows you don’t have a clue.

How good is that single ‘4K’ sports channel that Foxtel has for $59 a month going for you? What a bargain!

                          • -3

@Nousernamehere: You literally have no idea what you are talking about. You are living off your research from almost a decade ago, and you are making a fool of yourself. Things have moved on. The best plasma tech was surpassed years ago. And resolution makes a huge difference. So does HDR. You have neither of these. Micro dimming and QLED tech has led to LED televisions with better colours, blacks and motions than any plasma ever had. Good QLED TVs approach OLEDs for black these days. But keep living in the past and believing your piece of junk is the best TV in the world. I'm sure your 1999 Camry is way better than a 2020 BMW 3 series too, because back when you bought it, it was the best value for money 4 door sedan wheels magazine could recommend.

                            • @[Deactivated]: Haha throwing as many ‘buzzwords’ into a post as you can to try and prove a point is laughable. Please do show me that $1100 LCD which has all those great buzzword features you enjoy throwing around?

As I asked before, how’s that $59 Foxtel subscription for a single 4K sports channel going for you? What about the massive amounts of 4K content out there on other services along with that 4K Blu-ray player you have?

Considering I’m paying $0 for Kayo right now, I’m more than happy with that on my ‘shit’ plasma, but you go do you.

            • @[Deactivated]: Maybe so, but sport looks terrible on every LCD i see. Jerky and pixely compared to my plasma. I think I'll keep the plasma until i can afford an OLED…

    • It looks great on my Nvidia Shield - matches HD Foxtel if you ask me. Bear in mind that setting video to Auto can give you better results than HD itself. Also you need to run at 50fps to get the motion right.

  • We use a chromecast controlled vai iPad/wifi. It’s easy to move between rooms etc as well. Our older Apple TV wouldn’t support Kayo (as far as I could tell)

Minor issue for us is that if the microwave is used the video lags and drops quality for a bit. Weird, but no biggie.

    • It's just because the microwave uses the same 2.4GHz frequency as Wi-Fi. And practically all microwaves leak some of their electromagnetic radiation.

      • Yeah I get that. If it’s important to you, you might want to use wired connection, or just not use the microwave.

  • For those that aren't aware the 3 months of kayo for free via the beteasy website was extended until the 16th of september. I made a post but it got taken down by the moderators due to ozbargin not allowing deals from betting websites. So I figured I'd post the steps here instead :)

    The steps are as follows;
    1) Open an incognito tab on your browser. (this is just incase you are already signed into a bet easy or kayo account)

    2) Go to the beteasy website and create a new beteasy account (just enter fake details. You don't need to add any funds to beteasy. Simply decline a deposit limit then click "take me to the website").

    3) Navigate the beteasy website to the promotions page. Scroll down and you'll find "3 months kayo on us". Click on the link then select join kayo now. (if for some reason the link to kayo doesn't load you can copy the last part of the url where it will be bet something for example "Betb8fxxUnWg3". you can then just go to the kayo website and enter this code in the voucher section).

    4) Enter your details making sure you're able to access the email address and phone number you've put in. (if you've already used you're own phone number just put in your mums, then call her and just say hey what was the code you just got sent?)

    5) From here you just need to confirm the phone number and email linked then you should be good to go.

Note you must wait until you're in the third month of the trial until you remove your credit card details. It will not grant you the following month/s if you choose to remove them before that final month.

    • You can use it on an existing account that has lapsed if you copy in the code as you said.

No need for a new account or phone number.

    • Does this still work now that BetEasy and Sportsbet have merged?
