What Tools Required to Fix Apple MacBook Pro and Where to Buy Tools ?

Good afternoon all,

My room mate's Macbook pro is water damaged. She sent that to apple store for repair. They asking $1200 + for repair. She can't afford to pay that much that's for sure. She called me if it's okay to pay that much for repair. I said NO!! You can buy used ones almost same price. I think it's not worth to spend that much. She recently lost her job too. I've given her my windows laptop so she can do her job hunting or whatever. I told her no promises but I'll try. I've fixed other room mates's windows laptops before but not Mac. She won't fix it sometime soon. I said I'll try but but no promises.

watching couple of videos on youtube. it looks complicated but I'll give a try.

What tools I need apart of these items below ? Where you buy them locally for quick shipping ?
So far I need these tools
P5 Pentalobe screw driver
Isopropyl Alcohol

what else ?

Thanks

  • First question is, is it actually water damaged or is that just what Apple said?

    • Leave it in front of a fan for a few days IMO. You have nothing to loose.

In that case, open it up, spray it with copous amounts of electrical/MAF cleaner (Jaycar sell it), and then it should be okay for a while.

Go to the link I posted above for instructions on tearing it down.

        • Shoud I use MAF spray you mentioned above orIsopropyl Alcohol?

Check out Louis Rossman, has a lot of video on these problems

    • not really sure, 2016 or 2017.

  • Is it a good idea ? Will it not push the water further in ?

There are lots a lots of videos on Youtube around this however MacBooks are very very complicated things so you will be very lucky to get away with simply wiping it down with Isopropyl Alcohol. If you want to invest is something decent, this should get you into pretty much anything -

I just know Paul Daniels repairs electronics. He has an electonics repairs business for computers. I only know him through Louis Rossman having many guides to fix macbooks. Most likely need a hot air station, soldering iron, soldering wick. Electronic components will vary depending on the model and what parts of the computer got wet.

  • I've done windows laptops too - but my daughters macbook pro was a completely different beast. All I wanted to do was the replace the battery! They glued it in, punctured the old battery trying to prise it out and decided, stuff this - took it to a 3rd party (guy who operates out of his garage). he supplied and installed the new battery by the next day.

All I'm saying is be careful!

edit - just noticed you're in Melb
This is the guy : https://your-pc-clinic-best-cure-for-your.business.site/

if local to that it might be worth a shot.

  • Hi guys, just to give an update on this. Thank you all for your tips and tricks. Honestly it wasn't very hard to dismantle and put it back. I took the board out using Xiaomi Mi Wiha Screwdriver Set and gave it a good bath with IPA Isopropyl alcochol also used a soft brush to clean all the connections. Kept it infront of a fan to dry. Though the alcoho evaporate in less than a minute but just to be sure. Wallah all good now. Cost me $35.00 in total.

    Stay safe.
