  • Doh just got 4 ties last month :(

    • sorry mate, can't help, i also bought 4 tyres - 4 months ago. :(

    • Damm. I got 4 of them last week from bob jane :(
But they are Michelin and kmart dont sell them too. But looking at this, I would have gone for bridgestone.

      • Well i bought 4 tyres 2 weeks ago but i don't regret as i know this is a gimmick. The best price i got from Kmart was $50 per Tyre more than what i paid at Tempe Tyres.

  • Does KMART have good prices for tyres?

    • Search WP. Many people says, People at kmart are not that good.

My last experience with KMart tyres was suprisingly good . Went there for dome super cheapo tyres and was given the old "do you want a wheel alignment with that ?" . I just said do it if it needs it and figured 10/1 I'd be shelling out for it whether it needed it or not . On pickup I was informed they didn't have any of the el-cheapo tyres in stock so they went ahaed and fitted bridgstones , I started adding it up in my head … The next sentence was don't worry we will not be charging you any extra and the car didn't need a wheel alignment . Well impressed with $125 tyres for $99 and their honesty in not charging me for the wheel alignment . The definately won themselves a repeat customer .
On the other hand my mate's wife got absolutely ripped at some other place the other day with expensive tyres and inflation with nitrogen .? Pretty sure they saw her coming .

  • What KMs do you guys normally change your tires?

    • depends on your driving/wear

    • typically, tyres should be replaced after 40kms

      • +4

        40kms?????
that would be every time I drive to work

        • +3

ah, this is really going to increase the time of my trip to sydney

It depends on a number of factors - there is no hard and fast rule. Tyres themselves vary, depending on how they are constructed. Tyres manufactured from a soft compound (eg performance tyres) grip better but wear quicker than harder tyres. Your driving style plays a huge factor in how tyres wear. Also, tyres last longer when you have a proper wheel alignment, when they are rotated regularly, and when inflated to an optimal pressure.

Legally you must have at least 1.6mm of tread across the entire face of your tyre. For safety (particularly in wet weather) I would suggest that you replace your tyres before they are this worn.

Rubber also deteriorates with age - I would be looking at replacing your tyres if they are more than five years old. The date of manufacture is stamped on the sidewall. It will be a four digit figure representing the week and year they were made eg '1607' means they were manufactured in the 16th week of 2007.

  • *Double post please delete! :)

  • Some Kmart Tyre stores really suck.

    • +2

Maybe for car servicing but how can they possibly get fitting and balancing tyres wrong?

      • Yeah exactly. The only thing that matters is the price, and while they might not be the cheapest, I'd say taking $100 off (effectively) and including free wheel balance is at least going to make them competitive, and the convenience is worth something too.

        • Not really, I have several times having problem with alignment with that particular store. Took it back still the same, finally have to take it to another Kmart Tyre and asked them to check again.

        • how do you know they done wrongly? just a question.

        • -2

"how do you know they done wrongly? just a question."

Because the car won't go strange after alignment, if the alignment is good the car should go strange without holding the wheel.

Actually the last 2 times after I replacement 4 tyres with them both have the same problem and have to took it back several time.

And now still have some problems because I just found that the outside edge of the left front tyres wear a lot faster than the right side, so my understanding this was caused by wrong alignment.

Of course I am talking about after regular pumping.

          Also don't buy Goodyear.

        • thanks

        • thanks

        • What's wrong with Goodyear?

        • Goodyear wear a lot faster in my experience.

        • Just an update about the alignment problem with Kmart.

Finally I have to replace the 2 tyres on the left hand side because I found that the outside of the 2 tyres were completely wear out because of the wrong alignment. I did the free rotation with them every 10,000 and paid for the alignment.

I have just got a alignment check with my friend who works at Mazada service centre and the report showed the left hand front tyre alignment were completely failed as well as the tyre.

In that case what do you think about Kmart tyre you decide it yourself and I will never go back to Kmart tyre again.

          Especially Castle Hill Kmart Tyre.

  • I've got a defect notice on my vehicle for front tyres, might as well get them all replaced using this :) Thanks!

  • Thanks for this. Had my wife hassling me to get new tyres for a while now…

  • Where is a cheap place to change tyres?

    Is Jax cheap?

Apparently replacements for my tyres cost an absolutely ridiculous $450 a corner.

    • Call a few stores before going. But go for good tyres, if you love your family :).

But, JAX look good. I got my 4 Michelin tyres replaced for 540 with front and rear alignment from Bob Jane.

Out of curiosity, Today I called JAX now and they quoted me 498 for the same job. so 40 dollars extra for same tyres. I am sad, as why I did not I get quote from them earlier.
Cheap looking local tyre stores near my area were expensive.

  • do we need to present the add to them or is it applicable at every kmart? :)

    • +1

I just called them up and said 'I understand you have a promotion on atm' and he immediately said yes and mentioned the details. So I think they're just giving it out to everyone - no need to present the ad.

  • +3

Thanks OP. This is one of the better promos floating around for buying 4 tyres, unless your tyres are really expensive then the 'buy 3, fourth free' works out better.

I need 2 tyres. Does anybody else in Sydney need 2 tyres? we can go halvies on the fuel card lol.

    • Found when I asked for the 'buy 3, fourth free' offers at other tyre places, the tyre price was the RRP - about 1/3 more expensive than I could buy from Kmart - so was not a deal at all!

    • +1

keep the other 2 for after learning to drift ;)

      • that's how 2 came to need replacement :)

don't want to buy anymore than needed as it's time I sold this car for obvious reasons haha..

  • I think you can get $100 fuel card as well as cashback from Goodyear.

$150 or $250 depending on which ones you get.

Now this would be bargain if it went through.

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/54765

    • thanks mate, i will update my post, so people won't missed the benefit

    • But do Kmart stock Goodyear EAGLE F1? Not listed on their website…

  • When does this promotion end? Any one might know?

  • are continental tyres any good?
they have $140 cashback offer from jax?

    • Yep,

      Mercs use Conti's.

    • Continental would be amongst the bees knees of tyres imo… that cashback deal ends today though :(

  • Continental tyres are very good, though they tend to wear quickly - at least the sport contact do.

I was going to get Bridgestones next - was unsure about getting potenzas or something cheaper.

Can anyone recommend a hard wearing tyre thats cheap and safe - if it does exist!

  • Guys, you can get $30 gift card from Amex too for this deal so it's actually $130 gift card. However I chose not to and got 4 Continental 16" tyres from Tempe today and get $70 cash back. I find it's better that way.

    • Whats this AMEX $30 gift card thing you speak of?

  • Bridgestone AR10, are they good tyres for Sydney roads?

    • +1

nothing is good enough for Sydney bumpy roads

Try this online store for the very cheapest tyres . Pretty sure it's free shipping at the moment but you have to factor in fitting and balancing .

  • Tyres are too dam expensive!, for example. $90 each tyre means 4x90 = 360. and that's just for a small economical car. the $100 free fuel will last you only 2 fuel refills and that's it. so really a small bargain.

    • I disagree, considering you only buy tyres once every 3-4 years, they are a relatively small proportion of the cost of car ownership, compared to rego, insurance, fuel, servicing, and the biggest of all….DEPRECIATION! And considering they are the one part of the car that most affects your safety, I think it is well worth spending a little more. Just picked up 4 x Continental ContiComfortContact™ 5 yesterday for $115 each from Jax and they are very smooth and quiet. $70 cashback made it $390 for 4 (very good) tyres…happy with that. $140 cashback applies to tyres 17" and above, $70 for 15" and 16", nothing for 14" and below. Unfortunately cashback ended yesterday.

      • What size continental tyre were they and which JAX did you go to. That is an excellent price for those tyres.

        • Jax in Epping (VIC), near Bunnings.

    • +1

Try buying a motorcycle tyre or even a reasonable quality bicycle tyre . Per kg of rubber car tyres are an incredible bargain .

      • Good call, my wee 250cc FZR tyres used to be $250+…

  • Great bargain and thanks to the poster, I've found Kmart tyres to be very competitively priced.

One thing I would say to fellow OZ Bargainers is check out what other deals are around. I bought my last two tyres from Bridgestone two weeks back ($10 ea cheaper than K-mart) and Bridgestone offer a Tyre Hazard Road Warranty on all new tyres - http://www.bridgestoneselect.com.au/Products/Content/safe_dr…

In short it means if you accidentally damage your tyre and it requires premature replacement (isn't worn out) they replace it FOR FREE!!! Or at a pro rata rate if its more than 10% worn out. I initially thought it was a bit of a gimmick and then hit a storm water drain and cut the side wall on my new $220 front tyre. Went back and they replaced it at no cost.

It not savings right now but it might save some people money over the life of the tyre :)
