What to Do with Credit Card Points?

Hi,

I want to cancel my ANZ travel adventures credit card this month. I have around 40k points in it. I got this last year to use the complimentary flight and lounge pass and for other things but haven't used those features. I usually move my points to krisflyer but I am not seeing any use for transferring these points, as I won't be using them for maybe next year. Is there any other alternative on how to use my points or simply buy some gift cards.

thanks for your help

  • Redeem it for a plane ticket and see how lucky you are.

    Gift cards

  • hoard them until you can fly again

  • Last time I checked, only flights could be redeemed and everything else inc redeeming for gift cards was on hold until further notice. Don't forget, you will also have ANZ points to redeem as well with this card. The ANZ points can be redeemed. Looks like you can redeem wine as well now

    • sorry, I meant about ANZ points, I transferred the velocity points to krisflyer when I got them. So as per your comment, i can redeem them to gift cards or something right?

      • Yes the ANZ points can be redeemed

    • I thought qantas FF store is still open? I redeemed a gift card not too long ago.

  • I have the same card but have transferred most of my points to VFF (not so lucky).

My bigger issue is I have two unused flight allowance (last year's and this year's). Last year's was redeemed for a Melbourne flight that never eventuated because of lockdown and Virgin grounding. This year's is looking unusable. Has anyone been offered any solution by ANZ? I could close the card but I would then lose this year's allowance (which I have paid via the annual fee).

    • I got $120 refunded off the annual fee. Send them an internal email via your account via ANZ website (not app). Think the other choice was extending when you can claim the flight too from memory

      • Damn that's little. I know the annual fee is divided into two components but it's still painful to see the reality.

        • Email them. You may get a better/different offer.

    • I'm in the same boat. I booked flights November 2019 to fly to Darwin for Easter 2020. Now they want me to rebook and fly by November and I'm in Vic - highly doubt this will eventuate + 60 day in advance booking :|

Haven't booked this year's flight and am hoping for a full annual fee refund because that at least would make me happy, but don't know my chances..

Bear in mind the annual fee is split into two components ($75 reward and $150 card fee iirc). You can only claim refund on the card fee component and only if you have paid your annual fee within the last 6 months.

        • I did read someone was successful getting the full annual fee back (not going to go dig out comments on forums) but perhaps it was a lie… eh. I actually still want to keep the card for the international purchases but wonder what the features will become due to all the Virgin Australia changes.

        • ANZ waived the entire annual fee for me. I had major complaints about redeeming the complimentary flights which took months to sort out.

          • @blueyez: I booked a flight, then cancelled and was given a code to keep it as a credit. Was offered a $150 refund, but declined it as I said a full refund or I'll keep the flight credit. Cancelled the card (the flight credit still remains though in my name, but held by ANZ). Cashed out my points (whole $40 gift card). Switched over to platinum with no annual fee in first year and received a $120 credit. No idea why, but not asking. Voice recording clearly has me refusing. Will be interesting to see what happens when I use the flight credit (when there isnt the risk of a $4000 forced hotel quarantine ).

  • I've been hoarding them to sell. I wish I'd cashed them out last year, but hopefully they'll be worth something again next year.

From memory you only get 60/90 days until they cancel your ANZ points after cancelling your cards. I binned around 2,000 of them because they wouldn't allow me to transfer to velocity.

  • I'm in the same situation needing to cancel a Westpac business altitude card immediately but waiting to see what happens with Velocity/Krisflyer to use my points (around 165,000

    any thoughts?

    thanks

If you haven't used your flight or lounge pass, I would suggest considering booking it for future use or trying to get some money back from ANZ if you don't intend to use it.

Regarding ANZ rewards points, you redeem it via the site https://anzrewards.com/

    example gift card redemption amounts;

    $20 Woolworths Supermarket e-Gift Card
    (4,445 Reward Points)

    $50 Woolworths Supermarket e-Gift Card
    (11,115 Reward Points)

    $100 Woolworths Supermarket e-Gift Card
    (22,225 Reward Points)

    $200 Woolworths Supermarket e-Gift Card
    (44,445 Reward Points)
