[Solved] Temporary Debit Cards for Safer Online Purchases

I vaguely remember some talk in the past here about temporary online debited cards for those times we're not comfortable giving out our credit card online, but for the life of me I couldn't find it. Does anyone here do that?

Update: Virtual!—that's the keyword I forgot. Thank y'all =D

Solutions:
* Revolut
* Zip Pay

  • They only do it for business these days:(

  • I think privacy.com was one of the more popular ones. I don't believe its available in Australia.

  • I thought Auspost or similar used to have prepaid visa debit cards? They were selling it like they were gift cards that you could spend on nearly anything?

      Yeah they used to have them but I’m prettysure they got rid of them. I used to use mine for things like renewing VPN subscription

    Maybe one option is to setup an account with a neobank like Up and only fund it (instantly with PayID) when you want to purchase. Leave it empty otherwise. Could work?

      Some of them have the ability to overdraw so this isn't necessarily a safe option.

      • Indeed. From Up bank T&Cs https://up.com.au/product-terms/

        10.2. If you do overdraw your account in breach of these terms and conditions:

        we may debit the overdrawn amount to your account;
        we may restrict the way in which you gain access to your account, such as suspending card access;
        your account may incur an Overdrawn Account Fee as per the fees and charges set out in this document;
        we may calculate interest on the overdrawn amount on a daily basis, and debit it to your account half yearly for the Up Everyday Account & Monthly for the UP Saver Account, until the overdrawn amount is repaid;
        you must repay the overdrawn amount immediately; and
        we may cancel any payment facility linked to the account.

        Interest rate charged on overdraw is 11.23% from the website

  • Just go for it, and if something dumb happens just cancel the card/get your money back

    Easiest way would be to use Google/Apple Pay if the site accepts it (they use virtual card numbers), or PayPal (your card number is never handed over).

    Westpac does digital card version of your own debit card and gives you a 24 hour expiry CCV

  • RIP Coles Prepaid Reloadable card which even gave you Flybuys points.

  • I know Revolut has a virtual debit card. It works like an bank account but you can allocate funds into different currencies.
