Are there any great small car deals now or wait till year's end?

I've had my money's worth out of my current motor, looking to update. Are there any killer deals to steal around at present or would I be better off waiting till the end of the year? Just after a small 4 door, bells and whistles an advantage but not essential.

Not a Toyota, their prices jumped @ 30%.

    • I noticed that too, except it seems to be the a wider increase across the entire market in new and used vehicles. Why is that?

      • It’s a stupid economic rationalisation that if you sell less product, you need to increase the prices to make the same profits. It rarely, if ever, works because it typically has the opposite effect. You pump up the price and people are even less inclined to buy, thus making less profits and the requirement to further increase prices.

This only makes it better for the competitors, because they see an increase in sales and react to the higher prices set by increasing their prices but still remaining priced below the others.

The used vehicle market is a bit different. That seems to be a case of supply and demand. With people losing their job or being scaled back on hours and businesses cutting costs, people are holding onto their vehicles for longer, so there is less fresh used stock being turned over. People are also looking now at buying a low km used car over, perhaps a new vehicle. This drives up demand. Less cars being traded and more people wanting them drives up the used car prices.

        • Thank you for your in-depth explanation. Would a dealership be willing to negotiate on a used car during this time? I'm looking at purchasing a used 2018 Hyundai i30.

          • @Phlume: They may negotiate, but nowhere near the levels pre-Covid when they had more stock then they could sell. But that being said, you may want to head out of the city and find smaller country dealers who might be struggling some more and just need the turn over.

Again, with everything, there is going to be that inevitable user that comes here and replies with their “I GoT 5o% oFF mY uSeD cAr!¡!”, so, YMMV…

  • Kia?

      People who recommend MG's?
Chinese not purchasing our beef/barley/ wine.
Perhaps we should not purchase MG's

      • +1

We should not purchase MGs regardless.

We do not purchase MGs for the same reasons we don't drive into trees. We don't want broken cars.

  • Suzuki baleno glx (1 litre turbo) are easy to negotiate cheap, non turbo version is normally 17k drive away and turbo is another 2-3k depending on which salesman you get.
Climate control, Apple/android play, lots of airbags, 2nd to largest boot after jazz ect.

But they are horrible to drive. Like Suzuki's answer to a Nissan Tiida.

      • This is true from experience

      • Yeah lousy build quality, far off the Swift mark.
Baleno is made in India, Swift Japanese… and it shows

  • That new Yaris is pretty good value.

Toyota should of managed expectations better with the pricing and maybe not called it a Yaris but a new name. Heaps of tech in there.

Higher initial cost but you might be saving in fuel and serving/reliably - but yet to be observed till later.

That new 3 cyl is interesting
