I presume this is the HW-Q950T. Don't spend that much money on a soundbar no matter what paper specs say. Get a proper surround sound system which will be leagues better.

What if I want a sound bar because of it being compact?

    • Hey Hybrid, Have you got a recommendation on a surround sound system for about the same price?

    • +2

100% agreed. Before you get lynched the point is with soundbars beyond a certain price point is that the return per $ just inst worth it due to physical constraints.

You might get 50% better sound if you spend $500 instead of $250
But only get 10% better sound if you spend $1000 instead of $500

I’d say go audition it. Carry some proper 5.1 HQ source on a pendrive since TVs may not provide Atmos via ARC. The audio quality/feel/immersion may surprise you!

Source: My Denon+Accusound5.1 setup is in storage because space, wife acceptance, kids, etc.. but meanwhile I’m loving my Samsung Q90R soundbar! Very few other soundbars - except maybe Q80R if you can’t place rear speakers - came close in comparison when I tried them for myself before buying.

Having said that, I got my Q90R for $1,100 IIRC.. I may not have paid too much more than that though.

PS: I don’t agree with the diminishing returns statement by the poster above me.. I would’ve loved to save $500 for 10% lesser quality/feel/effect. Go audition for yourself if it all possible.

Great system. While there will be those who bleat about buying a full, wired surround sound system, this suited me perfectly, and the sound is fantastic.
External sources are easilly connected (wired/wireless/BT).

I bought a nice, cheap set of rear speaker stands off eBay and the system is now complete. Very pleased.

    • Do rear speakers have battery or do they need to be plugged in?
Would love to know also which stand you bought. Thanks

      • I think the JBL has speakers with a battery.

        • Yeah I did check that out before this one came out but I think I'm more tempted for the Samsung.
I've had the Phillips Fidelio with detachable speakers but they're quite old so they don't support a lot of more modern formats.
          - plus it doesn't have a lot of centre when you detach the ends so I found that annoying for dialogue

They need to be plugged in.

        These are the speaker stands..

@edsnails: I was originally going to buy a pair that was almost identical but double the price. These have to be assembled yourself but takes about 5 minutes each and they hold the weighty speakers perfectly.

            I'm very happy with them.

i have this and really like it. came from a big speaker setup with an amp. mrs kept complaing how ugly the big speakers looked, so i made a compromise. i was hesitant because everyone says sound bars are worse than buying the individual speakers. but i am constantly surprised at how awesome this is. this system has me thinking people are in my house with the surround sound. its awesome! its one of those items that you feel you will never have to change or upgrade, its just great. i would never go back to speakers and amp

There are lots of good soundbars out there, most people criticising them have never listened to them, they just like to feel part of a club that echos other strangers sentiments.

    • i would never go back to speakers and amp

Curious. How does this sound system work?

      • you plug the soundbar to power and hdmi to tv, back L+R and sub each need their own powerpoint. then they pair wirelessly. when you watch something on netflix it says atmos or dolby what ever and just plays through all of them like magic. also got my PC connected to one hdmi port in bar, and PS4 in the other. also got a chromecast in back of TV so can cast music grouped with other speakers around the house.

    • What's your room layout do you have walls on every side?

      • wall is missing on left side, it opens up in to kitching living

Yeah I bought the previous gen Q950R and have to say it's worth every dollar! Especially if you are in a proper square shaped room… The sound just bounces off the walls and ceilings, giving you a fully immersive experience! I came from the old Sony muteki 6.2 setup and this has not disappointed.

    Elite price

Just be aware that the screen for this soundbar is now on the top and not the front as it was on the Q90R.

The Soundbar is also covered in a cloth type cover which over time will attract lots of hair and dust, to me it feels cheap.

If you can still track down a Q90R for cheap, I would recommend getting one of those.

  • Might be a noob question but how does this compare with Sonos arc

    • One con for the arc is the lack of HDMI inputs. With the Samsung you can plug your media devices straight into the bar to get lossless sound. The arc has to rely on the audio return from the TV. For lossless 3d sound the Samsung beats the arc especially if your TV has no eArc hdmi port.
Another one to consider is the LG flagship SN11TG

Have these for 3-4 weeks now. The sound is great, especially with a good Atmos track, but beware the multichannel LPCM support is incredibly bad right now.

I could get multichannel LPCM from my PS4 one day and the next, it switched to stereo only. It seems like it's not correctly telling the source device what its LPCM capabilities are over the HDMI connection. On the Switch you can thankfully force it output surround regardless, but no such setting on the PS4.

The other issue with LPCM is over eARC. I have this paired with the Samsung Q95T TV, and you'd expect the whole point of eARC would be to carry high bandwidth audio signals to the audio device, especially since this soundbar only has two HDMI in ports. But nope, eARC works fine for compressed formats like TrueHD and DTS:X. but for LPCM it's again stereo only.

I'm not if the eARC issue is a problem with the TV, or just an oversight with the HDMI specs where they thought of implementing the ability to carry the audio signal back but didn't think have the relaying device (TV) pass on the capabilities of the receiving audio device over to the source.

    • But of chatter about this issue on whirlpool forums.
Firmware update for soundbar May have added LPCM support (people saying none prior to this) but now it’s a bit fiddly, especially with PS4.
Seems to be some interesting workarounds.
Still confident Samsung could patch in future firmware update

      • Yeah, no doubt it’s fully capable, just needs to be patched to work reliably.

Don’t get me wrong, the audio out of this thing is fantastic, as you’d hope for a soundbar at this price. They just need to iron out software issues, the worst being the LPCM one.

  • This or lg sn11rg?

Thanks OP! Just got the Warrawong, NSW store to price match this for me. Sales staff spoke to their boss on the phone for a bit and gave me the green light.

I was looking at this unit - watched this review and decided to hold off purchase until future software update
