Is the word "Jap" politically incorrect?

I see many stores advertising "Kent" pumpkins as "Jap" pumpkins, the "Jap" being short for Japanese.

E.g. Harris Farm

Is using the word "Jap" politically incorrect? Genuinely curious.

Edit: Apparently Jap ISN'T short for Japanese?

JAP has always stood for Just Another Pumpkin. Its how the originators market it.

    http://www.thefruitsoflife.com.au/product.asp?c1=2&pid=190

Also Kiwifruit is Chinese Gooseberry and Canola (from CANada and OLA (oil)) is a marketing term for rapeseed.

    • Seeds of rape would surely offend somebody.

    • From the page you quoted -
"It may just be an old wives' tale, but it is said that Jap pumpkin derived its name from growers who weren't sure of how to market it, so they chose the acronym of Just Another Pumpkin!"

Note it states " It may just be an old wives' tale, but it is said…"

Nothing too accurate or factual there.

  • Why not… Jap is simply a contraction of Japanese.

Can people not just sit there and look for things to get offended by? 😒

  • I find it amazing that almost every black or racial term/depiction is being disputed, but selling your time to someone is given no care whatsoever as to whether the terminology or depiction is offensive. I see offended people everywhere not hesitating to say anything they like if you sell your time (may involve your body) for money. Got no time for it, until they stop being absolute hypocrites!!

Anyone here in Ozbargain of Japanese origin? Your opinion is urgently sort to close this matter out.

Look. The way the world is now, everything is offensive. So the answer is probably yes. Question is who actually cares other than the perpetually offended. Even calling someone by their name can offend them. The world is just crazy. We need a reboot

Take your pick. I'm not bothered.

Dont trigger the pumpkins, you'll get cancelled. Pumpkins are sensitive to words.

I remember a car shop near me called 'Jap imports and parts'. It's probably still there on Logan Road.

It's not used in an insulting way when referring to a pumpkin variety.

I am married to a Japanese woman, and I currently live in Japan. Japanese people eat 'Aussie beef' from the supermarket, and they smile when they say it, happy to connect to Australia through their imports.
Be happy you can connect with Japan through their sweet pumpkin varieties.

Reminds me of the meme, 'calls mates c**ts, calls random people mate'.

I feel bad for giving attention to a thread checking for sensitivity.

  • Sure the term relates to the type of pumpkin. That aside there is a lot of casual racism in the world that most people may not even notice and this is very much the case in Australia often because of the national sense of humour. That doesn’t necessarily make it ok in this new, some would say, woke world. The word Eskimo is a very good example. I can’t wait for the day that Aussies are encouraged to start calling their Esky by a different name ;)

If we can't have Coon cheese, surely we can't have Jap pumpkins??? Both being changed are as equally stupid, but the not so silent stupid majority seem to rule.

Is living nearby Hooker Boulevard OK for a decent family?

Politically incorrect behavior is a modern invention to complicate life and speech. Limiting freedom of expression. Unnecessarily.

So everyone will, as an example, be rather "timid" to call a female human: girl, woman, lady and whatever.
Or how do you call a person of dark colored skin? Not all are from Africa, nor all from Africa have dark colored skin.
    Pathetic.

    Just complicating everything.
    As a distraction!

    • Try person of colour…Totally uncomplicated.

      • Of colour … hilarious generalization … typical of a white person simplification.

        Just colour. Hilarious.

  • Is the word "Jap" politically incorrect?

It is if it's used in the same sentence as horseradish. I got banned ASAP.
