Meat Quality Comparison between Supermarkets

Hi all,

I have been buying meat products from Costco, Woolworths, Coles, Aldi for a while now but I always find Costco meat products are superior when it comes to the QUALITY.

Thus, I would like know everyone else’s perspectives.

Coles cuts seem to be more consistent

The quality varies widely between supermarket competitors and between specific locations.
Sometimes I can't believe some of the low quality, poorly cut steaks and meat they put out for sale.

The worst lamb cutlets I ate in my life came from woolworths.
Cooked them rare and they were tough, dry and lacked taste.

On the other had I have caught my local Coles selling meat underweight by 30%.

I do like that you can still get fresh chicken maryland from the Woolworths deli while Coles only sell prepacked for double the price.

Both shops are pretty bad so you really need to visit both and be fussy about what you buy and be prepared to walk away to get the best quality. The supermarkets know most people just pick up a tray and look at the price rather than the quality.

I'm not sure why you'd bother with this comparison as going to a butcher will save you money and net better quality meat.

    • Agreed

    • Not many butcher shops close to where I live

      • Not many in general, a lot do delivery now in regional areas ect. I would assume if there is Costco accessible there is Butchers also accessible.

Butcher shops in my area are generally 50%-100% more expensive than the supermarkets.

Second this, every butcher around me is more expensive than colesworth

I work in the meat section at one of the major supermarkets, everyday I have someone tell me that the meat they got on their previous visit was some of the best meat they’ve eaten in their life.

I always find it funny when I see people commenting that supermarket meat is terrible quality. You get what you pay for.

    • Do you buy/eat the meat you sell or do you go to the butcher?

      • Bit of both. I've been to butchers and got terrible quality meat, I've also been to butchers and got great meat.

  • I always find Costco meat products are superior when it comes to the QUALITY.

You get what you pay for. I've found that Costco meat is normally a bit more costly than the others, and you have to buy it in larger packs. But generally pretty good otherwise!

Would it help you get a better response if you changed the title to: "Meat quality comparison between supermarkets"?

    • Title updated, thanks

  • Go to the butcher… also add that as a poll choice

depends on the type of meat and what you use it for.

never going to find thinly sliced wagyu beef at a supermarket for korean BBQ, and likewise you are not going to find a rib roast at asian butcher, western butchers are excellent for quality steaks and premium quality meats, and supermarkets will be cheap and reasonable quality of common cuts of meats

you get what you pay for and you need to shop around for what you need

  • Yeah, pretty hard to compare. There are two Coles near me and one of them has decent quality meat/bakery products and the other is terrible.

For meat specifically, Costco is significantly better than the supermarkets. I'd have to get it from a decent butcher to get better quality than Costco.

  • Woolies do 80 day grain fed.

I highly recommend the Coles Finest Angus Scotch - 100 day aged. Very low stocks lately in Vic.
