Cheapest Plan for Receiving SMS Overseas

I will have to stay overseas for the next 4 months. After Boost planned to remove its international roaming after mid Oct, my original plan of using Boost overseas is not feasible anymore.

Any suggestions on the cheapest plan I can get for receiving text only?

Just get a prepaid $5 aldi sim https://www.aldimobile.com.au/starterpack/ and turn on roaming? Receiving texts is free. Sending is not. The credit it comes with lasts for 12 months.

I’m on Kogan (expensive or non-existent roaming) so on my last overseas trip where I needed sms access, I bought a $5 Aldi sim and changed all my bank phone numbers for the duration of my trip. Worked great.

Are you stuck overseas due to the incoming passenger restrictions? I think if you create a stink with boost, they'll probably extend the deadline.

How do you plan to get a new sim card while overseas?

    • Well, I haven't gone overseas yet (it's an urgent business trip and I have to go). I still have about a week's time to get the roaming thing done.

I can give a try with Boost, but no guarantee they can offer an alternative :(

Out of interest (and unrelated to your question), have you gotten approval from ABF? I thought they were only approving travel on compassionate grounds (?). What's your plan for coming back? Seems to be lots of press about Citizens and Permanent Residents stuck overseas indefinitely due to the incoming passenger cap.

No point, if you can get another sim card easily. It might help someone else that's already overseas though.

Amaysim and Optus is another option. You can activate a sim without a plan via live chat. The sim should stay active for ~12months without any credit. Incoming sms's are free on both.

Stay away from Kogan, for some reason they don't have access to the full vodafone roaming capabilities.

Also check that whichever company you end up with supports roaming in your destination country.

        • have you gotten approval from ABF?

Yes, I did. I met the criteria "your travel is essential for the conduct of critical industries and business (including export and import industries)"

Great suggestion. I'll have a try. Thanks!
