I find it really depends on what other equipment you are using: if you have an iPhone/iPad, get the Apple 4K TV. If you use Android & PC, the Shield will suit better. Also keep in mind that Apple Airplay doesn't work on Android TV, and only a few Apple apps support Chromecast.

Both players should be able to play content from a NAS. The Shield supports external network storage by default via the SMB protocol, not sure about the Apple TV. I recently bought a Shield and it is definitely the best Android player. It just works, and receives frequent updates. Same can be said for Apple TV but I don't have Apple equipment.

It's like comparing Apples to…… yeah ok.

I have both and the Shield is in the lounge room and the Apple 4k was in the lounge, then made it's way to the kid's play and is on it's way to eBay.

Absolutely no comparison. And this coming from someone who has an Apple phone and a Macbook. The Shield creams the rest of them and the Android TV interface is versatile and easy to use.

  • If your NAS is decent you wouldn't need anything?

There is pretty much zero need to watch anything over 60hz in 4K so I'd be sticking with the Apple for sure anyway. Extra fps is good for games, bad for video.

Shield has Dolby Vision and Atmos support but it's $350. I believe it may not be able to play 4K Youtube clips either.

if you're prepared to pay $350 I would want something with AV1 hardware support which is the emerging codec at the moment that you will probably regret not having in a couple of years. I suggest you should enjoy your Apple 4K and not think of upgrading until something with hardware AV1 decoding turns up.

    • Intel are just launching their next gen laptop CPUs featuring… AV1 decoding! It's the future. Wouldn't be spending big bucks now and still not getting it.

    • I haven't heard of AV1. Is this the replacement for x264/x265? Do any of the current media players support it? I assume not? When do you expect AV1 to start becoming mainstream? Maybe this is why Apple still haven't released a new version of the Apple TV 4K?

  • You could buy the Apple TV 4K now, and then relegate it to another room when you upgrade to the replacement which could be months away.

  • Yeah good point about the 4K 60hz video. That is only really useful for games and sport. Movies are MEANT to be watched in 24p (48Hz/50hz/60hz) anyways, unless you want the weird soap opera effect that comes with higher frame rates.

  • i HATE the Apple TV UI..

  • Anyone know if nVidia TV will support the Acorn streaming channel. In theory it should as it is Android TV but I was hoping to find out before I pull the trigger.

  • Same boat need a second streamer. Apple TV 4k being shuffled between rooms but had looked at shield before deciding to go anothet atv box. Until the 6th gen discussions crossed my searches. And struggling to find atv in stock so wondering if the clearing has begun for the 5th gen?

  • finally bought the Shield Pro, I must say its way better than Apple TV 4K that I have owned before, its a lot horse power as compared to apple

  • I'm looking at getting an Nvidia Shield TV Pro, but can't decide between the Shield, Apple TV 4K and I also don't know if the Chromecast with Google TV would be enough for my current needs. I want to install streaming apps from different regions (Hulu and other overseas streaming providers) and use either a Smart DNS and/or a VPN for stuff I can't access via the Smart DNS. Which of these media players would be best?

With VPNs, I assume you install the app for whatever VPN service you have to use it?

Also, when installing apps from different regions, do you have to switch between profiles, or do they all stay in the same place and you can use either the Smart DNS or VPN to use the different region app?

  • Anyone have an opinion, and/or any advice anyone can give me?

I'm also looking at the Chromecast with Google TV, as I already built a HTPC a few months ago, so not sure I want to pay top dollar for a Shield or Apple 4K due to already spending a bit of money on the HTPC (if I didn't put together the HTPC, I would definitely be looking either the Shield or Apple 4K. In the case of the Apple 4K, though, I assume a new version is due out sooner rather than later? So I wouldn't want to pay top dollar for the current Apple 4K either).

The main reason I am looking at these players is because the quality of certain services (Hulu, and to a lesser extent Netflix, Disney+ etc.) is worse through a web browser. Hulu, especially, is pretty poor quality on the browsers I use (Chrome, Firefox, Opera). Not sure if it works better on another browser? I do know the quality of Hulu on the old non-chromium version of Edge was looking like 1080p. I think I tried it on the Edge beta a few months ago, but haven't Hulu on the current official Edge chromium yet (I guess I will try tonight). From what I've read, they've done it like that to deter people from using a browser. Not sure of the real reason is as it's just speculation I've read online. Maybe they want people using their app, but unfortunately, Windows 10 doesn't seem to have an app to download and use with one of my VPNs. Neither does Disney Plus+ and a bunch of other streaming services I want to use from overseas.
