Buying from Amazon.com and Shipping, Prime?

Hi legends,

I've been given a script for Melatonin, and its not on the PBS and costs $42 for 30 tablets.

On Amazon.com.au it doesn't exist

On Amazon.com it's $7 for 120 tablets!! + $10 shipping.

The spend $39 or whatever it is for free shipping, does that or similar apply to Amazon.com purchases? Is there any benefit for Prime when buying on the Amazon.com site?

Actually, can I even buy from the .com site?

Cheers

Might be a while before you get it though, and if you need it that badly…

You cannot use .com.au Prime for .com purchases. You need to go through .com.au listing.

So the $39 spend for free intl delivery doesn't apply for listings like this.

      • Still gonna have shipping issues. Do you really want to wait till next month to receive it?

Suggestion would be to buy the Aus priced ones and get started now, while waiting for the US imported ones

  • Are you allowed to import that quantity of Melatonin?

    • GP says yes. No restrictions on Meltatonin imports. Told me to buy off Ebay.

    Doesn’t look too effective:

A 2017 review found that sleep onset occurred six minutes faster with use, but found no change in total time asleep.

    • Wikipedia…must be true then ;)

But seriously, i want to try anything before sleeping tablets!

      • Doctors can prescribe you Circadin if you want, but it is very expensive and it's not like it has any magic compared to cheaper alternatives from iHerb or amazon

Also hot tip for sleeping — try sleeping on your side not on your back (as doing so prevents you from snoring and potentially waking yourself up) and also try different pillows of different heights. You can also ask your voice assistant (Google / Alexa) to play relaxation music or white noise to help you relax.

        • That's the prescription I was given @ $1 per tablet. I think I'll try the 120 tabs for $12 from Amazon US.
Chiropractic pillow is great, but there is no way I could sleep on my back. Same as sitting up on planes. Just don't work that way…the 17hr flight from the states is always fun. Handy when driving though as I literally just keep truckin. As for voice assistant..that would be my dog! I don't have wifi let alone a sirigooglezon ;)
But thanks for the tips. Actually found being more hydrated can help a bit with drifting off. Also managed 11hrs zonked after a cava session with locals in Vanuatu..might be something in that… Unfortunately in this case it was Cryptosporidium and sleep was no longer the number 1 issue (for the true cava players out there, enjoy the pun).

In the US it is available to sale as an every day product. In Australia it is not. In Australia you can buy homeopathic version which contains no melatonin, you can buy it at the chemist for some reason. Anyway if I remember my sleep psychology topic right, you need to take melatonin not when you go to sleep, but 12 hours before your body reaches peak which is about 3/4 the way through your sleep. You start taking it near your current sleep patterns and you gradually nudge it close to your intended sleep patterns. That was just the one professors advice but my point is you might find melatonin isn't a sleeping pill you pop before bed. It's something that's already going on in your body and part of your body clock. Maybe the clocks gearing is too strong to just turn the dial all at once, you have to plan ahead how much you are going to push it each day until it is the correct time. And as soon as you wake open your blinds so you get sunlight in your eyes, that will probably do even more for resetting your body clock to where you want it. But do whatever your sleep doctor says if they have a plan for you.

    • The best time to take melatonin varies from person to person. Most studies, including a most recent from 2019, showed that 30-40min before bed time was the preferred time.

Effectiveness of melatonin has been controversial, with most studies saying it is not effective. Placebo effect might play an important role, and the exact way how melatonin works, when it does, is still unclear.

Melatonin doesn't work as a sleep inducer for everyone. Nocturnal animals, for example, also have increased melatonin levels during the night, although they remain awake during this period. It's quite interesting.

Moreover, a small dose (0.3mg to 1mg) of melatonin should be enough, but the presentations are usually between 3mg and 5mg.

I'd recommend anyone suffering from sleep disturbance to check sleep hygiene first. Some people complain they can't sleep and when we get more details they are trying to sleep in an environment with noise and lights, with phone on and vibrating from time to time. That's very basic and it should be obvious that such behaviours/environments are not appropriate for sleep.

This is a very comprehensive guideline for adults:

      • Yeah, I did a professional sleep study with all the probes and data loggers. They are the ones who suggested Melatonin….from Ebay!!

    • Yep, yep. Aware of this, but thanks. I rarely get a sense of tiredness. It could be 7pm or 4am. Feels the same to me. I kinda just get bored and going to bed seems the right thing to do. Never fallen asleep on a couch in my life! However, my muscles hurt / immune system suppressed etc with little sleep. So more sleep would be good. So sleep Dr says try Melatonin (says the same, Australian 'herbal' melatonin contains no Melatonin!) and get thyroid checked. Would be nice to see what all this tiredness thing is all about.

Try iHerb or something like that… Check coupons using the Honey browser extension and add enough items to get free delivery.

  • I buy my (non-homeopathic, actual) melatonin from the US on either of the sites below. They have all varieties of strengths etc but i'd recommend the time release versions.

Haven't had any issues with them so far, except semi slow delivery times but that's the US for you in times of COVID.

    https://au.iherb.com/c/melatonin

There was talk of them making actual melatonin no longer prescription in Australia recently, but who knows how long that will take to come through, so the US importing it is!

    • So iherb is in the states?

      • Yeah, they ship everything from a US warehouse.

  • Been buying my melatonin off iHerb for years. Amazon US are also crazy cheap as well
