Question about Quality of Floor Tiles

Hi guys. I wasn't sure who else to ask.

Tldr- will a $55/m tile be much worse than a $75/m tile? We're going plank timber look at for a cheap home.

We're currently looking to tile our first home and were going to go with Beaumont tiles. I've negotiated a a $75 tile down to $55, however they are out of stock of Italian made tiles due to covid and the eta keeps being pushed back.

The local chain promised their tiles were on hand at $65 negotiated down to $51, yet when I went to order they were actually 10+ weeks away.

I've found a mob in Brisbane doing an Indian made tile similar to the local chain, and negotiated $55 down to $48.

I am not sure if I should wait indefinitely for Beaumont and go with a better quality tile, or just bite the bullet and go with the cheaper one.

Should I be worried about going with the cheaper tile.
The cheap has an equivalent anti slip rating but no official durability rating, though that might just be a Beaumont thing.

Thanks for any insight you may be able to provide.

  • It will be stuck in your house forever. So go with the one that looks the best.
Not necessarily saying Italian made tiles are top notch, but Beaumont have a better warranty and are repuatable.

  • Price is tied to what people are prepared to pay - not necessarily quality or longevity. Pricing can also reflect what is a more difficult tile to manufacture.

  • Beaumont is one of the bigger branded tile shops, your money is going towards their fancy shops, advertising etc. I wouldn't use the rrp as a guide to the tile quality.

    • I'm wondering if Italian vs Indian made has a bearing in quality though

  • There's no way i'd have any tiles anywhere but the bathroom personally, everyone in my home has slippery fingers and there are chips everywhere in our tiles from people dropping glassware.

    Hey, a Tiler here.

Don't worry yourself too much about cost v quality. Some of the $30 per m² is just as good as the $75m² tiles.

We've layed many different brands of wood plank style tiles and the only thing you really need to look for is the straightness of the tile. This will determine if you will get tile lippage once laid (assuming you're using the randomly laid method)

Look at the sample and down the length of it to see any bowing or take a level and hold it against it. The less bowing the better.

Check out National tiles, their quality is good and have stock in hand of most wood style tiles..

    https://www.nationaltiles.com.au/shop-tiles/shop-by-look/woo…

Make sure your tiler uses a tile levelling clip system as this will also eliminate lippage once laid.

And don't worry about the slip rating of wood tiles, they're not a glossy porcelain and have a grained pattern which itself creates a non slip effect.

    • Thanks for your insight. I have some samples coming from national tiles but they don't quite have the colour I'm chasing. Unfortunately I won't be able to see the one we want in person except a sample to check for bowing.
