Is GTX 1650 Super Good Enough for VR (Halflife Alyx)

I have just decided to build a pc, and thought of the possibility of VR, but not sure if the pc im building can handle it.
here are the following specs
CPU, xeon e5 2420vs, 6cores, 12 threads, 2.2ghz, turbo boost to 2.8ghz i think
ram, 8gb 1333mhz ddr3
gpu, gtx 1650 super, 4gb

Wanted to know if i an tip my toes into VR since it always seemed like such a cool concept

Was also thinking of getting the oculus quest and using virtual desktop to play pc VR games

  • How much are you thinking you will be spending on the gpu? You can find second hand 2060-2080 for maybe $500 if you can wait a bit

    • Budget-wise the 2060 non super should be dirt cheap when the 3060 comes out.

  • gtx 1650 super costed me $$240.

Not good enough. You can execute with minimum settings and barely enjoy it. Wouldn't call that playing.
8GB RAM is too little and need at least 6GB GPU VRAM.
What's your overall budget? Have you bought those components?
    SteamVR Performance Test

  • You don't have enough RAM for starters. Running out of memory causes issues in game, and levels can take a long time to load too especially in Alyx.

GPU is a little on the weak side, if your budget is super tight maybe consider going to Facebook marketplace or Gumtree and picking up a used but high end graphics card from the previous generation. Even GTX 1080 or a Radeon Vega will be miles better than the 1650, though lots of people should be offloading RTX 2000 series cards right about now.

    • yeah not in this current market, the prices for graphics cards are skyhigh.

  • Not really meeting any of the published minimum specs on steam. CPU, RAM, GPU, VRAM are all not going to make it. If you're trying to build with an old Xeon I'm guessing you're on a super tight budget. VR headset is probably going to cost as much as the whole PC? I'd personally put all the money first into a low-mid tier modern system and have a generally all-round better experience, just sans-VR for now.

Since you bought it, why don't you test it and tell us?

By the way, I warned you about the GPU Prices Crashing. I mean AUD$240 ain't that bad for a GTX 1650-Super, but I think you could've gotten a slightly better deal now. Nvidia really gave us consumers what we've been asking for the past 3 years: acceptable prices, great performance.

Anyways, here's some noteworthy gpu's listed:
    Low-Profile: GTX 1050 Ti, GTX 1050, RX 460, GTX 750Ti, GTX 750, GT 1030, Vega-11, Intel HD Iris Pro.
    Make it Rain: (USD$1500) RTX 3090, RTX 3080 (USD$700),

The new hierarchy of cards for mortals like us looks something like this:

    Luxury: (U$500) RTX 3070, RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 2080-S, RX 7700XT* (A$700),
    Flagship: (U$400) RTX 2080, GTX 1080 Ti, RX 7700*, RTX 3060*, RTX 2070-S, Radeon VII (A$500),
    Ultra: (U$350) RX 5700 Xt, RTX 2070, RX 5700, RTX 2060-S, RTX 2060, Vega64 (A$450),
    High-end: (U$300) GTX 1080, RX 5600 Xt, GTX 1660 Ti, GTX 1070 Ti, GTX 1660-S, Vega56 (A$400),
    Midrange: (U$200) RX 5600, GTX 1070, GTX 980 Ti, GTX 1660, RX 590, RX 5500 Xt (A$300),
    Budget: (U$150) RX 580-8gb, GTX 1650-S, RX 480, R9 390X, GTX 1060-6gb, R9 290X (A$200),
    Low-end: (U$100) GTX 980, RX 570, RX 5500, GTX 780 Ti, R9 390, R9 290 (A$150),
    Entry level: (U$50) GTX 1060-3gb, GTX 1650, GTX 970, RX 470, GTX 960, GTX 780 (A$100),
    Dumpster: (U$5) R9 380X, R9 280X, HD 7970, GTX 680, GTX 770, R9 285, GTX 950 (A$10).

    *expected performance/hypothetical
**prices in USD, did a rough AUD conversion but probably not quite correct since have to factor Shipping, Tax, GST, Supply, Demand, etc etc.

So for around $240 which graphics cards do you think I would be able to acquire and is better than the gtx 1650 super?

      • +1

        It really depends.
There's the location factor, also supply/demand, and how good you are at snagging deals. I helped get an RX 580 for a friend, it was initially listed for like $350 and stayed on gumtree for ages. I asked if I was able to see the card in person, then made an offer there, got it for $200. Mind you this was over a year ago. The list I put up goes from Fastest to Slowest relatively (can change per title). And the prices are a guide obviously.

So for $250 price you could get anywhere between an OC GTX 1660-S to an RX 480-4GB. But there's no point asking about what you could get, since you've already purchased it. I think just keep it as it is, and enjoy the system until you save enough to upgrade the entire system later on.

…did you manage to play Half-Life Alyx?

        • No, i can actually return it, as I bought it from amazon and they support a 30 days return period. So if I see the price is right I can return it and snatch a better deal

  • I run a gtx1050ti with vr and it seems to work fine, gets pretty hot though.

  • Your CPU of choice isn't ideal for gaming.

    • is it because of the 2.2 mhz??

      • Yes the frequency is too low.

I'd look for the faster chips the system supports, and buy one for use.

I've see 2680/90's sell cheaply ($50/80) on local Gumtree. Also some 2680 V2's for $150 each.

        • K, got the motherboard, ram and cpu for $70……..

  • Look mate honestly this is a really weird post to me. You seem to have a really tight budget but then you're considering buying an Oculus Quest as well to play VR, with specs that won't be able to run it.

You've picked a non-gaming, server CPU, RAM that's over 5 years old and a third the speed of the average RAM nowadays, and your GPU is severely underpowered if you want to have a good experience in VR.

If you genuinely want some advice, what's your budget, and what exactly do you want to do with the PC?

Because I can tell you with what you currently seem to be planning, I can tell you that you won't be having a good time.

    • I was getting the pc for some 1080p 60hz gaming(my budget is around $350 for my pc) And the thought of VR just popped into my mind and was wondering if I can play VR with my pc hardware(Gonna get the oculus quest 2 which is rumoured for around $450)

      • 1080p 60hz gaming you can likely scrape by turning settings down, but VR will not be an enjoyable experience, and it definitely won't be at 60+fps. VR is heavily dependent on refresh rate to look "smooth" - otherwise you end up with motion sickness.

  • just wondering what the rough, minimum system requirements will be for the next CS ( the one after CS GO)

    • Literally nobody has any way of knowing this.

And I doubt they'd release another in the next decade with the cash cow that is the current CS:GO, with the esport scene as it is and the community still highly engaged, it'd be stupid to split the playerbase like that.

Linus did a video on this exactly (min specs for HL): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTwgInKmEHI

    • So mine should be fine, as gtx 1650 super is more powerful than the gtx 1060

      • "fine" is relative. If you're asking if it's possible for the game to run; yes, however if you want to have an enjoyable experience, you'll need a better graphics card. You said you're planning to play at 1080p/60fps, VR runs at multiple times that resolution - I'll be surprised if you get a stable 30fps in VR without making out the individual pixels. Plus with low refresh rates you run into motion sickness.

  • The problem with VR is it needs very high resolution or it will look bad, its not like a normal monitor where you can mostly get away with it.

The 1650 will have to run it at lower resolutions, which might make you dislike VR because everything is so aliased and blurry.

    • So I need more vram?

      • Amongst various other things, yes.

      • You need more GPU power in particular.

a 1070 would be barely enough, a 1080 or equivalent would be better.
