Best Video Card < $200

Hello

Am looking for a cheaper though decent video card to put in my older desktop PC (it’s about 9 years old).

I bought some used ddr3 ram for cheap on eBay to bump up the memory, though regarding video card was looking at spending <$200 (preferably <$150) as it’s an older PC and I don’t want to invest to much into it (though still want to give it a bit of an upgrade).

Was looking at the RX570, which can get for around $190-$200 new; and not too much cheaper used.

If I could get some recommendations on a video card in a similar league (new or used) to whack into my PC, I would be forever grateful.

If you haven already, consider getting a cheap ssd to throw in as well. those things make a massive difference to computer speed for <40 bucks

check power supply wattage and any 8pin pcie power

cpu could be sandybridge i5-2500 or phenomx6 1050, or if lower/older … gonna bottleneck the rx570 anyway

9yo psu might also be degrading , so might want to consider gtx1650 or super new or gtx1060 used , for much lower power draw

i would actually spend less by getting rx470d from aliexp, if no good local used deals

Nvidia will be less power hungry compared to amd.

  • I just had a look, and I have a 750W power supply in the PC, so power-wise I think I should be ok.

Besides boosting up my ddr3 ram to 12gb for cheap (max for the motherboard), I also bought a new 500gb SSD for $75.

Processor wise it’s an i7 920 (acer m7721), and only has 6 pin for video card.

  • I think there was a good deal recently on new RX 580 for $220-240… can't seem to find it though.

The gtx1060 (go for a 6gb variant) is coming way down now that the new 3000 series are announced. Should be able to snag one for around $200 (or less if you get lucky on gumtree). Ive seen some posted up at the $200 mark so if you haggle bit you could do pretty well.

  • I just had a look at my PC and have x2 6-pin connectors not in use, so can buy an adapter for an 8-pin video card.
    So that solves that issue.

So is the consensus to buy a RX570/470 or GTX1060/1650?

Would you speculate that prices will drop over the next month or 2, with the upcoming release of the new 3000 series cards?

      yes prices will drop eventually

but if you're going to buy one now , don't pay stupid prices for used cards, when 1650super is 239 new and outperforms rx570/gtx1060/pars580

  • So after having a bit of a look around I think I will go for either the RX 570/580 8gb, or the GTX 1650 4GB (probably used to save a few dollars).
The thing I am a bit worried about is that the GTX is only 4gb while the RX is 8gb.
I understand that the GTX is a newer/more efficient card, though will the 4gb difference make much/any difference on games like FS2020, or am I overthinking things?

    • cards are expensive because of the mining boom, in january you could get rx 570 for ~$130 second hand and that was good value, now not so much when the 2060 is going for $400
