Planet Earth Special Edition is an update of the 2007 Blu-ray release. This edition includes bonus features missing from the previous release along with some new Blu-ray exclusive features. Planet Earth is the highest selling documentary DVD/Blu-ray and is the most expensive factual series ever created by the BBC. This six-disc set expands on the previous four disc set by offering over thirteen hours of bonus materials in the way of extra footage, making of documentaries, and commentaries.

The picture is presented in 1080i MPEG-4 encoding, though the original was presented in 1080p. The image quality is quite impressive. Colors are vibrant and detail is excellent.

The sound is presented in 2.0Mbps DTS-HD 5.1 surround. The audio track is dominated by David Attenborough’s narration, which is clear and easy to understand.

Planet Earth is a must see, and this new set is a great package with some great features.

  • Just got one from Amazon UK B4 the free delivery presumed run out(now extended to 11/12 !!) Got charged £14.16(without VAT)
Does Zavvi charge VAT(tax) and not free delivery now?

    • No they don't refund the VAT unlike Amazon. 14.16 from others. Delivery is 99c which is cheaper than amazon unless you buy other things to go over 25.

  • Cheaper at Amazon UK £14.16

    • but that is with the free shipping. You'd have to buy something else

Also Zavvi has 5%/10% discount codes in their newsletters

  • Spawnpoint, you mention in your comments that the original was in 1080p. I own what I think is the original, but it is also in 1080i, not 1080p.

    • blu-ray.com disagrees

      Video
      -----------------------------
      Video codec: VC-1
      Video resolution: 1080p
      Aspect ratio: 1.78:1
      Original aspect ratio: 1.78:1

      • The box says 1080i on the back. When I said "what I think is the original" I did not mean I own a knock-off; it's just that nowadays things are released over-and-over again, so it's hard to tell what is the "first" version.

    • 1080i indicates it was probably recorded from TV or something, there is no reason to release interlaced video on bluray and I think should be illegal :)

Also my copy is 1080p, but thats stored on my computer.

      • Your copy may be HD-DVD rip which I believe was 1080p. The HD-DVD release was on HD30 (dual-layer) and Blu-ray was BD25.

Still unsure as to why blu-ray.com suggests original was 1080p given 2 poster's copies are 1080i.

"Due to the nature of filming in extreme habitats, some footage was not captured in Full HD"

The original is 1080i on the box, but it plays at 1080p. Apparently they must state the lower resolution even though the majority is actually higher.

The special Edition is worth steering clear of though. There are some major remastering faults on this set. i.e.

The UK (NOT US! Which is the one rated on Blu-Ray.com) Special edition contrast is just so high.. Everything looks white.

          Wasn't this fixed recently though?

          Please note:
Although rare, some early versions of Planet Earth Special Edition [Blu-ray] have a contrast issue. This problem has now been corrected and 2 Entertain Video can issue replacements for this problem
only. If you believe your discs to be from the faulty batch please send them in without the
packaging to the Freepost address below and they will send out a replacement free of charge.

        • Not too sure, hopefully they have fixed it. I know they denied it for ages. I got a copy recently and it had the issues still, too annoying to send away to get fixed though.

(I think mine came from Zavvi by memory)

Im going to reorder with Amazon and hope for the best :)

    • I got a copy from amazon uk and it's 1080i

i don't know about others but i find all the docs that david attenborough narrates mind-numbingly boring.

    • +1

That's fair enough, but you're wrong.

  • I love these series. It's really an eye-opener. Even without the narrating, it's absolutely beautiful.

  • I can't remember where I read it, but I recall that only 2 of the episodes are in 1080i for technical reasons, but the rest is in 1080p.

  • If you look at the Zavvi page, the Special Edition Planet Earth is £14.95 save £20, while the standard edition is also £14.95, save £34.

Anyone know Zavvi codes for further discount? Otherwise it maybe worth buying Planet Earth from Amazon UK combined with another Blu-Ray.
