Boost Mobile - Call Drop on First Attempt of Outgoing Call

Since about a month or so, I've been observing that when I call from my Boost Mobile Prepaid, the first attempt always ends without connecting. No message is played, it is just 'Call Ended' without anything.

On calling a second time, it connects well. Although this is a minor issue, it has been occurring frequently now, and sometimes it takes 3 attempts to call. This does not depend on which network you are calling, and also occurs for both national / international calls.

I've checked my phone, and nothing has changed. My network coverage too is almost always-full (Telstra, yeah) and the issue has cropped up only since a month ago.

Anyone else using Boost Mobile facing the same issue?

  • I had a samsung that would do this.. had to get the phone repaired.

  • Happening with me as well, can't recall if been like this for a month, but a couple of weeks for sure

Edit - on 2 separate phones

  • My wife has the same issue.

  • iPhone X and 6S, Boost prepaid $150 plan. Same issues. And this issue occurs 90% of the time. Rarely I can call at once.

  • Not always ideal but does it occur when using Wifi Calling/VoWiFi?

  • +1

I have boost and the same issue. Try again and again until it works.

  • I thought Telstra has had problems with its 4G network; some in my area were changing their mobiles to 3G only and that seemed to help.

  • If you are on wifi try turning it off. I find that maybe it is confused and tries to do wifi calling.

    • I'm on a phone that doesn't support VoLTE or VoWIFI, still I'm having the issue. Others here are reporting that they have the issue regardless. It doesnt appear to be driven by any function/feature of the phone, but likely to be a network capacity issue. Would this be due to several people moving to Boost from other MVNOs?

Take more than several people. It isn't like NYE party in your local area.

  • Yes. Same problem on my wife's Galaxy S10e Dual Sim. Sim 1 is belong mobile - no issues. Sim 2 is boost - consistent call drops on first attempt. I have switched VoWifi off so let's see if this alleviates the problem.

Well, glad to see that I'm not the only one. Hope Telstra/Boost fix this issue.
Sometime back, I had another issue. Even if Mobile Data is Turned ON, it wont enable and internet wont work. Options to make it work were:
    1. Turn off Mobile Data.
    2. Toggle Airplane Mode and turn if back OFF
    3. Turn ON Mobile Data. Chances are that it still wont work. If so, go back to step 1 and repeat.

This issue has stopped now though since past couple of months.

  • Doing the same on me Xioami mi 9 on VoLTE

    Samsung S8

Havn't seemed to suffer these issues.
    Melbourne 3031

  • I sometimes get cut off at the 15min mark on international calls

  • I did a hard reset of my phone last night and have had this issue all day today. I assumed it was due to the hard reset and some feature that changed (VOLTE maybe?)

Or is it just a boost issue that was really bad today?

EDIT: Also dual sim phone. Swapped sim slots last night as well.

  • Got a Galaxy S10e and I noticed call drop-outs last month. Haven't noticed it happen since.
Turned off WiFi calling and did a couple of restarts during the issues which didn't fix anything. Was frustrating but glad it went away

  • I was getting this after I upgraded Oppo Reno z to color is 7 about a month ago. Given the numerous bugs that were introduced (or at least I thought they were bugs) I assumed it was an issue with the OS rather than the network. Interesting to hear lots of people are having it.

Boost are talking about upgrading their platform, with the temporary removal of international roaming, so I wonder if that had anything to do with it.

I also stopped getting sms around the same time. Not all of them, but if my screen was off when an SMS was sent to me it was probably 50:50 if I received it or not.

In the last 2 days I moved my sin to pixel 4a and doesn't appear to be an issue anymore…

  • Is this still an issue? Thinking of porting wife over and she'll kill me if there's issues for being cheap 😜

    • Lol. This is most likely a temporary issue. Telstra/Boost keep tweaking their networks. But of late, this has become a bit irritating. It happens often and each time need to attempt at least twice.

      • Good news. I'm still alive. My wife is happy, port was successful and not having call issues

        • Haha, that's good. Boost is not exactly 'just cheap'. It comes with Telstra Full Coverage, so you are essentially getting the best, at a reduced cost - as per the usual mode of operation of MVNO - no Stores, no real-person in store to support you, and few other perks which one may do away with if they are self sufficient in managing any issues with their service.

The ongoing issue of Call Drops is likely to be a temporary issue. Like I mentioned earlier, about 6 months ago, I used to face an issue of Mobile Data not working, unless I turn it off, Toggle Airplane Mode, turn data back ON, sometimes up to 3 times in a row. That issue solved itself.

This will also likely go away in due course.

I'm having the same issue, Xiaomi Poco F2 using 4G in SE-QLD. Most of the time it works the second try, but a couple times it's taken a good 5 attempts to go through.

      For me

Also on Boost and having the same issue on my previous S7 and now brand new A71. This is for EVERY first attempt of a call out. Very frustrating.

  • This has been happening for over six months for me, and I usually have to walk outside to make a call or use mobile data (and even the reception is choppy). I'm in Metro Melb.

  • Hi OzBs

I have found a fix for this problem at least on iOS 13. Please reset your network settings and this call drop issue disappears. Secondly, you will also get visual voicemail without updating to iOS 14. Thirdly, you will start getting missed call alerts also.

You can try this for Android also.

    • Thanks. What is 'reset network settings' in Android?
Missed Call alerts were already there, they've changed now though. Earlier it used to come as 'Voicemail', now you get a message 'From' the person's number who had attempted to call you.

      • Sorry I haven't used android in last 5 years.

      • On my Samsung Galaxy S8+
its Settings-> General management -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings

    • This worked on my Android.
I did a "network reset" as suggested and now my calls go through straight away. Will monitor and report back over the next few days.
Sadly doing a network reset will remove all WiFi networks as well so have to re-login everywhere I go.

  • I too have experienced this problem (OnePlus)

My friends who are also on boost have the same issue (Xiaomi)

    As does my mother (Samsung)

  • This!! Huawei Mate 10 Pro. Same issue started about a month ago. I had same issue a long time ago with a previous phone (maybe a couple of years ago), assumed it was an issue with the phone. Very annoying. Have to dial twice every time.

  • Same problem - P20 Pro on boost mobile.

I get the feeling incoming calls are having the same issue, as i've had quite a few examples of getting a text about missing a call, but it never rang.

  • Yeah, this is happening to me, but also on a Huawei Phone.

I heard it might be related to the towers Telstra are using.

  • Found this, and I quote:

I have been having dramas with Telstra, because they didn't support VoLTE on my Huawei phone (which came with a JB Hifi Telstra plan), and because they are repurposing their 850MHz band for 5G, they don't provide enough capacity for non-VoLTE calls. End-result: 1 in 3 calls does not go through. Telstra has been useless about it (as expected), even telling me "if my phone does not support VoLTE, there is not much that they can do for me".

    See this Whirlpool threadhere.

Telstra is repurposing their 850MHz band for 5G, and thereby reducing capacity for non-VoLTE connections.

I have been through Telstra hell trying to troubleshoot, and even sent my phone for warranty. In the end, I realised it doesn't happen on a phone that supports VoLTE.

Telstra's response: if your phone does not support VoLTE, there is nothing we can do for you. (of course they are obliged to provide me with the service I pay for, but unless you are willing to sue them, you are powerless).

    • I'm using a galaxy s20 with volte and still having this issue, and others here experiencing the issue have also commented the phones being used, many of which use volte. So safe to say volte is not the issue here

      • +2

        That's a bit surprising.
I can 100% reproduce this on my Huawei that does not have VoLTE. But it works correctly 100% of the time on my Galaxy S8 on Volte. When I disable VoLTE on my S8, outgoing calls fail in the same way as on my Huawei. I am therefore confident that, for my issue, it is VoLTE related. But there may be more than one factor at play….

Wife is on Boost with an S20. Never has any issues (uses VoLTE).

Please be careful if you use "WiFi calling". We disable this on our phones, because we often had calls drop out if it temporarily had a drop in WiFi signal (some corners of our house).

    • Yeah I just looked on RFNSA because I have this call failing problem on Boost, sure enough Telstra are adding 5G to our local cell towers.

My mother has a Nokia 6.1 which has Boost/Telstra VoLTE, she's not getting any issues.

I guess I'll need to put up with this until Vodafone/Optus install their joint cell tower near me.

This is becoming worse by the day. If 850 Mhz is being repurposed for 5G, which Band for 3G Calls will stay until 2024? The article on Whistleout says that 2100 Mhz was already repurposed for "4G", so that has gone as well. So only a certain part of 850 Mhz will be available for 3G Calls?

Telstra switched off 3G connectivity on its 2100MHz spectrum on March 25, but will continue to operate 3G services on its 850MHz spectrum until June 2024.

    • I know. And what is so infuriating is that they don't care one bit. It's not even possible to speak to a human - when you phone them, they tell you to install the app and use chat. If you do so, you get to speak to "Cody the A.I. Idiot". The only way to bypass Cody is by saying you want to speak to a human. I think the keyword "human" triggers an escalation to a person. But not just any person - no, it is a person who can honestly not be bothered to read up on history, does not read anything properly, and has no understanding whatsoever of the technology involved. I had to tell them 2 times to "please read properly" when they gave solutions to the opposite problem.

      • Hence, during chat, whenever I am describing my problem in detail, I keep the text "Copied" on to a notepad so that when a human appears and sheepishly asks "How May I Help You?" I just paste the whole damn text again in the chat window, bam! Learnt it the hard way after typing twice previously.

      • I took this to the ombudsman, but then one of the human chatbot people gave me the secret.

Call Telstra support from a landline and you get a human. Call from a mobile phone and you get the endless circle of IVR all ending in telling you to go online.

It was an absolute winner. Got through and solved my problem in 5 minutes.

        • Interesting - have to keep that in mind. Though I don't really have any landline anymore. I assume your problem was a different one? Because the one in this thread does not have a 5-minute solution (apart from turning on VoLTE if it is supported).

  • I do that too. Though after a while I changed to "for goodness sake, please read properly!".

  • I'm still having this issue. I thought it is my phone problem until I see this post.

  • Yep, having this issue on an iPhone. Very frustrating. Thinking of going to TIO and getting money back.

    • Let us know the outcome. So many people affected.
I changed phone in the end - there was no arguing with Telstra. And I got a good deal :)

  • My wife has Huwwei P20 Pro with Boost Prepaid 150$ sim card.
She faces same problem. We are in Glenwood NSW

First attempt or first couple of attempt always fails.
Incoming as well, phone doesn't ring and get missed call notifications.

Today I am trying by swapping to phone to iphone and see what happens.

I've read from prior comments that Huawei P20 Pro, although have Band 28 and all other 4G bands, is not "supported" by Telstra firmware, and hence VoLTE does not work on this phone. Similar is the case with many Redmi phones, due to missing "firmware" support from Telstra.

I think with this issue becoming widespread now, it makes sense for Telstra to support VoLTE on these other lesser popular brands too, instead of just Samsung, Apple, Google…

  • +2

I have the same issue with my Mate 20 pro. I have now moved to coles mobile $150 plan.

    • Did moving to Coles 150$ plan resolve the issue?

      • Coles uses Optus.
        Boost uses Telstra.

The issue is with Telstra repurposing its 850 MHz "3G" Band for 5G.
Optus uses different frequencies/bands and is not repurposing their 3G bands yet for 5G.

Hence, it will solve the issue. Of course, you need to be sure Optus is good enough for you first.

  • I've observed that since the past 1 week, starting 26-Oct, I am not facing this problem that often. Maybe rarely, but the frequency of call dropping out at first attempt has certainly gone down.

    • Did you change your phone? I have a phone that supports VoLTE and still have this problem.

      • Nope. Same phone. Without VoLTE. The issue has vanished since 1+ week now.

        • +1

Only getting worse for me, I have to make 4-5 calls before it connects.

  • I have a Huawei Mate 20 and my wife is on an Honor Play. Both phones were on Optus and worked absolutely fine, now both on Boost network have this issue.

Sometimes the first call will fail, sometimes it takes 5-6 attempts before it starts to ring.

This is definitely a Boost Network issue and not a phone issue (it may be a settings issue, but Boost does not outline any settings that should be changed).

  • Can confirm, this problem seems to have resolved in past 2 weeks. Can confirm I am no longer facing this issue. Boost has probably fixed something at their end.

As observed in the past as well, problems with Boost/Telstra are actively picked up and resolved by them, themselves. Although I agree quite a few people here might have complained about this problem.

    • actively picked up and resolved by them

Uhm, you mean after people like me made multiple support requests and complaints? Having their time wasted by being told to reset (wipe) their network settings, factory-reset their phone, and send their phone in for warranty, while it was a network issue all along? It was so bad, I had to buy a new phone so that I could continue to use my Telstra plan while in contract! And all the while, they made it impossible to speak to a human being on the phone.

How on earth does this translate into them picking it up and resolving it by themselves?

  • As of 22/11, I can confirm the problem has been resolved. I do not face any call drops on outgoing call attempts. Like I mentioned before, Telstra fixes these problems themselves, but does take considerable time.

Thanks for all the discussion and support on this forum topic. Now to find a phone with B28.

  • Is this the same problem as incoming calls not getting through. When a few people have been calling lately, it instantly ends the call. Like I have missed the call. So it rings as if it's a blocked number.

  • YES! I have exactly this problem RocketSwitch. No idea what to do to fix it. I'm assuming its a Boost/Telstra issue at the moment.
I factory resetted my phone, and found switching to 2G/3G only allows calls through

It's only affecting numbers coming in from other Telstra or Boost users as far as I can tell.

  • Just ported from lebara to boost and am getting this issue. Cant believe people have been having this issue for 2 years.

    On a MIUI android phone.

    • Hey there. It had well stopped for me after about 4 months or so after I first posted this. I have now ported out so unable to comment if this issue is still occurring now.

Btw, I too was on a MIUI Android phone, but the issue was with their network, so not much to do with the make and brand, but probably to do with absence of VoLTE on your handset.
