Do You "Quarantine" Your Parcels That You Get from Overseas? (Ie US/UK/China)

I'm talking about countries with high rates of COVID-19 infection

Some of my colleagues have taken to leaving the parcel in their garage for a month before opening it, the reason being we don't really know how long COVID-19 virions can last outside of the body.

I, meanwhile, crave the instant gratification of every day being like Christmas.

What do you guys do?

Rip it open with my teeth.

After I clean it with my tongue

Open it asap to make sure the right product was received and to check for any faults or defects.

Perhaps we should quarantine any mail from Melbourne

    • +1

But if I live in Melbourne, should I quarantine the parcels from me to make sure they are safe? 🙈

  • +3

Open the package to make sure the contents are fine, then wash hands.

Why would it be 2 weeks? They’ve only found items to have evidence of covid up to 72 hours. And even then, they haven’t always been proven to still be enough to infect someone.

  • +2

It takes over 72 hours/2 weeks/4 weeks to get to you.

But if something were to reach here overnight, it's safest to wait a few days before handling it.

    Lol

They should invest in a tinfoil hat.

They're all supposed to be doctors too…

      • Warn them there's a risk of dead covid virus found their way into frozen food too, think they've detected that in frozen chicken wings ex-Brazil.

They should invest in a tinfoil hat.

They have. The hats are just sitting out in the garage to wait out their quarantine, as they ordered them from China.

  • +16

Yeah, I quarantine them by having them take 6 weeks to get here…

Only six? I have a subscription service that ships out of New York… the last three monthly packages are still in transit, two of them stuck at Perth. Perth is the new Chullora.

  • Super economy shipping takes care of it all.

I've been opening up packages away from me and washing my hands directly after checking the contents since the Simpsons' episode.

  • It’s already quarantined by the time it arrives haha

  • +5

I just chuck the parcel in the dishwasher tbh

  • I spray the packet with soap solution and use my hands to totally coat it with a layer of soapy water. And use an old knife to cut the packet.

Sometimes I spray it with bleach and leave it for few hours.

they just took 3 months to get here. there's not going to be any covid19 alive in them …

I got a parcel from the US a few months ago and did a complete sanitised wipe down of the surface before I did anything else.

One of my packages from China was actually quranteened in April or so.

    • +1

      quranteened

Definition: a guarantee that a quarantine will occur

      • My phone auto corrected to that.

        • yeah?

  • +2

Spray anything that's delivered with Glen 20 - well I would if I thought about it, I haven't and so far, so good.

  • Pretty sure most of my recent packages have spent at least a couple weeks quarantined under a postal managers desk.

  • +1

It only takes a day for the COVID to get off the surface if there is any, or just grab antibacterial wipes and wipe it down and the object inside will be clean as it has probably sat there for more than 1 day if it’s coming from overseas

  • Just to be safe I get my kids to open it as soon as it arrives.

  • +1

I got some seeds I don't remember ordering from China, I planted them just to be safe.

  • I am quite sure that by the time they reach your door, that any form of hitch-hiker has passed away by then.

  • spray g20 copiously and leave them overnight. wash hands. next day open outer packaging and G20 again. leave for 10 mns, then check item is correct and in good condition for eventual claims.

  • +2

Surely it would be more important to quarantine a package based on couriers/postal workers touching it in the past 24 hours rather than someone in another country touching it in the past week(s)? If someone was infected via touching a package I would expect the source to be an Australian rather than someone from, say, China.

  • It is a virus and needs a host to survive. Cardboard is not a host. By the time the parcel gets here from OS, it has had plenty of time for any virus to have died.

  • those quarantine times arent very reasonable. physical items retain covid on them for a max of 48hrs, from memory, depending on what the material is (most materials only 4hrs). So you're really only in danger of catching covid from your postman touching the box.
We quarantine packages for 24hrs at the front door, then open them up

  • It's no riskier than local packages. Biggest risk is the delivery person(s).
