Budget Cooling Solutions for Upcoming Summer

Hello fellow OzBargainers,

I'm currently renting in Melbourne and am already dreading the upcoming summer. I was thinking about getting a head start and buying some effective cooling solutions before the prices go up at peak summer. Looking for effective cooling solutions on a budget (<100$ sadly because I am a student). Would evaporative coolers be my best bet? Would it suit Melbourne humidity?

Thanks in Advance :D

Cheap evap things are almost useless in Melb

    • thats what i was afraid of :( thanks :D

    • Yes, fans. Get two or even three, you can pick up decent pedestal fans for $15-20.
One by your desk, one in the lounge for watching TV, one in the bedroom blowing over the bed.
You'll find this is very effective for keeping you cool, if you sit right in front of the fan. If you're struggling with the heat, soak a cotton tshirt, wring it out and put it on, this will really cool you down if the fan is blowing straight at it.
Getting to sleep in the heat can be difficult, it's best if you are cool before you get into bed. Try taking a cold shower (or a swim) to cool yourself down first, you don't need to be completely dry as you get into bed as this will help to chill you as the fan blows over you. I've heard of people putting a wet sheet on the bed and sleeping under that, I've never tried it myself but they say it works.

  • How about one of those redneck hacks where you put ice in a container and attach the fan to it.

I find blocking the sun from the outside to be quite effective.

Ie, the blinds inside will trap the heat inside your home.

If you have an extra cover outside, it means most of the heat is left outdoors.

I got a uv resistant cover from bunnings, hooked it outside and the difference is night and day.

    • my parents turn their house into the house of terrors and close all their blinds in a heatwave as according to them it keep the heat out no questions asked, so its like walking into an oven, I do not go over anymore when its stinking hot.

      • Maybe draw an ms paint diagram to explain to them? Lol

I know how that house would feel… because I thought that was the right way before…but nope

        • I retired long ago from explaining something to a know-it-all !
How big is the cover you got from Bunnings by the way? A small tarp?
