New Car Stereo System

So I'm just trying to upgrade my 2001 Toyota Corolla at the moment. I have just installed a new head unit (Axis AX1870CP) and looking to now upgrade speakers. Anyone got any recommendations for new speakers on a budget? I am able to install it myself but just need suggestions for what sounds good for the price point.

  • What's the budget? Coaxial or components? If not using an amp, something with high sensitivity is a must.

    • I would like to max out at $300-$400. Anything is a go

      • You can get some budget focals at that level, which I have always liked. I just purchased some infinity reference, good sensitivity and 3 ohm impedance, which works well with stock amp. Good mids and highs, lows are meh.

        Don't forget sound deadening.

  • +4

Before you spend anything, make sure to tune bass/treble/balance etc. Won't cost you anything and you'd be surprised how capable stock speakers are.

  • Just get some Clarion or Alpine splits, they will sound miles better than stock.

  • I installed a pair of Hertz component speakers in the front of my Elantra, running off the factory H/U and wiring, and I believe it sounds better. Not as great as a new H/U and amp would provide of course, but much better than the factory speakers.

Also they have high sensitivity, so they won't sound quiet.

  • With old cars, you will find that sound deadening yields better results than speaker upgrade. A lot of the old cars are poorly sound insulated to begin with but to top it off, the materials have probably disintegrated.

If you can strip the internals, spend that $300 on deadening mats, another $100 on door seals, you'll get better value, albeit more labour required.

  • WTF IS AXIS

  • Bang for buck these ones from Jaycar are awesome:
