(Newbie) I'm looking to upgrade my PC that's capable of VR. I need help in what I should upgrade and such.

Hey like the title says my PC needs an upgrade, it's quite old and I'd like to be able to run VR as well as possible however I'm trying not to exceed over $1000. I know with these new GPU's coming out that'd be impossible so I'm thinking the 20x series which should be good for VR right? Anyway here's my specs.

CPU: intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4670k CPU @ 3.40 Ghz

GPU: AMD Radeon (TM) R9 380 Series

Motherboard: ASRock 787 Killer

RAM: DDR3 8GBS

Storage: 232gb SSD, 1tb SSD and 1tb HDD.

I know i need a better GPU and more RAM however my motherboard only supports DDR3, would that make much of a difference?

Thanks for the help, much appreciated.

If you're on a tight budget, go get a 2nd hand GTX 1060 and you should be good to go for VR.

    • Second this, 1060 is good enough for VR. If you want to do better, go for 1660. You don't need to worry too much about the RAM generations. There will be a performance difference but not that big. I don't see much of a need for 20 series cause your CPU might end up as a bottleneck.

  • It would heavily depend what sort of VR setup you are looking at running, a Rift S is going to take very different requirements than say a Pimax 4k. Are you just dabbling into VR as a curiosity? Maybe consider the Quest 2 that's currently in Pre-order as that is essentially a stand alone unit that does not require a PC tether. If at a later date you decide you love VR and want the full PC goodness, upgrade your PC and just tether the Quest 2 or upgrade your VR setup too.

Answering your question tho, I was able to get very decent experience on the OG Rift running an AMD 480 (various games ie Elite Dangerous, Beat Sabre, Robo Recall, Fallout etc) so a 1060 or 1660/ti would be more than fine. RAM wise 8gb is fine but absolutely no harm in slapping another 8gb stick in there, especially if you need to run both oculus software + steamvr + the game + background stuff.

Your CPU and all the rest are fine….again unless you have ordered like a Pimax 4k.

    DDR3 RAM is fine

    • Thanks for the info! I bought an Oculus Rift S, dabbing into VR. I know I definitely need to upgrade my GPU and another 8 gigs of ram. I may get the 20 series but as someone said my cpu might bottle neck it.

Also, just another question about VR, am I able to project what I'm seeing through VR on my monitor without any performance issues?
