Why Don't Barbers Wear Mask in Sydney?

I am badly in need of a haircut. I went to four different barbers today, but I didn't enter the store because none of then was wearing a mask.

I thought it would be a logical thing to do because:

  1. The person getting a hair cut can't wear it, as it it will be hard to cut hair with mask
  2. Social distancing cannot be maintained as barber can't cut your hair from 1.5m away

The only way to reduce the risk is if barber wears a mask.

Am I missing something here? Is anyone aware of the reason why they wouldn't wear it?

Have you asked them? If you have, what did they say when you asked them?

They couldn't understand his question through the muzzle.

no need to ask the barbers when ozb has all the answers pffft

    • +2

Yes I did, I was told 'do you want the haircut or not?' Didn't bother asking others.

Let's hope ozb has the some answers.

  • +12

Possibly because they don't want to, and don't have to.

    • +3

Fair enough. They have the option to not wear it, I have the option to not enter their store. Not surprisingly only one of those four barbers had a customer.

      • You sure do, isn't choice great!

  • +2

the place i always go to does , so the places/locations you are going to don't seem to care and get enough business from people who don't care either.

  • +1

I can only assume they've made a personal/professional choice. I'm aware of other outfits in Sydney where at least some (if not all) staff do wear masks … again, I assume they've made a personal/professional choice.

They hate their job and would rather be on JobKeeper.

It seems it is only 'highly recommended' in those circumstances.

It is a two-way thing though; if those barbers don't wear a mask, exercise your right to go somewhere else where they do and you feel safer.

    • You are right, just have to go a bit further tomorrow in attempt to get a haircut.

"Is anyone aware of the reason why they wouldn't wear it?"

I could think of a million reasons but here's one or two for starters.

Don't you be posting that here. The corona has nearly killed as many people as die from benzo overdoses each year here.

      • -3

:) Not when you factor in that the CDC fessed up that only 6% of all the 'claimed' deaths in the U.S. were covid-only deaths. Benzos still rule!

        • +1

Haha yes I posted this in the covid mega thread where it was basically ignored by the alarmists.

          • +1

@brendanm: I suppose they ignored the TGA saying both the PCR and blood tests were useless for detecting covaids as well?

        • "the CDC fessed up that only 6% of all the 'claimed' deaths in the U.S. were covid-only deaths."

          What?

          • @dstar012: There is a difference between people dying with Covid and people dying from Covid.

            • @whooah1979: Wait so lots of people died WITH Covid but not FROM Covid? What did they actually die from then?

              • @dstar012: The cause of death is recorded on the death certificate.

                • @whooah1979: "The cause of death is recorded on the death certificate"
Yeah i know that. What did those people in the US die from if it wasn't Covid?
Because "the CDC fessed up that only 6% of all the 'claimed' deaths in the U.S. were covid-only deaths."
                  You get what I'm asking

                  • @dstar012:

What did those people in the US die from if it wasn't Covid?

                    https://legalinsurrection.com/2020/08/a-look-at-the-weekly-c…

                    • @whooah1979: "Yet, those people who had heart conditions, kidney problems, or other medical conditions who died might still be alive except that they were infected with COVID-19." and "In conclusion: Table 3 does offer extremely valuable insight into the true health consequences of the Wuhan Coronavirus infections, but it should not be used to assert that the case fatality count is less than 10,000 in this country."

                      Straight from that link.

                      • @dstar012: I like said. The coroner will record the cause of death on the death certificate. If it doesn't say COVID then it isn't COVID.

Pandemics are just a profitable as wars.

  • same reason i don't wear underpants, because they don't want to

I went to the barber here in Brisbane and he tried explaining to me that wearing a mask makes you more vulnerable to covid. Not the brightest barber thats for sure. Got a good haircut though.

My local barber here in Sydney still allows and encourages all the kids to dip their fingers into the jelly bean jar. It’s really not a good idea at the best of times let alone now.

    • +2

Duh…kids are immune from covid-19, that's why the government allowed schools to stay open the entire time…

    • Many such cases of children dying from jelly bean jar related deaths. Sad.

  • Because they are hairy

      Your humour needs some work.

  • "The person getting a hair cut can't wear it, as it it will be hard to cut hair with mask"

I'm in regional Vic, and have to wear a mask when I go to the hairdresser.. It's not that hard…

    • Hmm, it will be interesting to see how they trim hair from sides without cutting the thread.

I managed to squeeze in a haircut with my regular barber just before Stage 4 restrictions started in Vic. I asked her twice if she wanted me to take off my mask but she was happy (perhaps wanted) me to keep it on. She just pressed down the thread and my ear to cut the hair from the side of my head which I like quite short. It was not hard and not uncomfortable. You'll get used to it. I definitely feel safer with both of us wearing masks given at that time, we were having daily cases of 500+. I wouldn't go to a hairdresser if they weren't prepared to wear a mask. But ask them as they might have their mask off until a customer goes into their saloon.

  • Depends on location in Sydney - do you meant Sydney CBD or Suburbs?

I’ve seen both the hairdresser wearing it and the customer wearing it whilst hair is being cut. So I guess it’ll depend on the barber shop.

Or barbers you’ve seen happened to be a “soup nazi” :D.

    • In suburbs. Going to CBD tomorrow, hoping to get a hair cut.

  • I think they should. They breath down your neck. They see 20 or more people a day spending considerable time with each customer.

  • Which barbers did you go to?

I passed one in Chatswood last weekend and all the staff were wearing masks.

    • I was in Hills district, around Baulkham Hills area.

  • Some barbers use the same comb without sanitisation. Those are the ones I also avoid.

  • Just go to some barbershop run by Asian, you'll definitely get someone wearing mask there. If memory serves me correctly some of the Vietnamese barber I've been to wore mask long before coronavirus was even existed.
