Looking for 120Hz TVs

Trying to find the best price for a TV that offers 120hz. Primarily for gaming.
Not too fussed on size, 40-60", really just the cheapest possible(without too many compromises)

The issue lays with advertising, most manufacturers don't even bother to list 120hz if it can't achieve that rate at 4k.

4k@120hz obviously requires HDMI 2.1 & TVs with that component typically cost $1500~.

I'm more than happy with downscaled QHD(1440p)@120hz as it's my personal belief that even the RTX 3080 & next gen consoles will struggle with 4k at that rate without too many compromises.

I'm also aware that HDMI 2.0 can achieve 1440p@120hz, the issue is the consistency in finding a TV that natively supports both the resolution & frame rate as again, very few bother to advertise this incredibly great gaming feature & instead feel the need to deceive us with mislabeled motion smoothing pretending to be refresh rates.

There are a few useful sites like rtings which find out this kind of information, but they're usually American based & we don't receive identical products.

Put simply, what's the best you can find that supports 120hz with at least QHD resolution(even if downscaled)? If it happens to be HDMI 2.1 AND supports 4k@120hz, even better, but I don't think it's going to be necessary for a long time & the kind of games to take advantage of it aren't like to be graphically intense to begin with.

For what it matters cheapest I BELIEVE that I could find which guarantees 120hz was the Samsung Q60 at JB for @1295 https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/samsung-series-6-q60-55-4…

As you may have noticed, it lists a false "motion" rate of 200hz, that USUALLY(not always) means 100hz with motion smoothing/blurring(I'm not too enlightened on how it exactly works, but I know it's not what I want), though such models can usually do 120hz native with these effects off.
This suggests HDMI2.1 but I'm not certain assuming Samsung is correct(their own site states the the same rate but not the HDMI specification or native refresh rates). Regardless, that is still more than what I want to pay.

    LG C9 OLED or CX.
Wait for boxing day sale. I got my 55" B7 at the time for $1560 with GG boxing day sale.
    End of story

    • Kinda wanted to get it for my XsX for launch but you do make a good point, the are a few sales throughout the year that absolutely blow everything outta the water.

At this point it doesn't look like anything dropping in price or a normal sale would be exceptional value.

I'll just keep my eye on clearances. Would really like an OLED.

      • Trust me, you wont go wrong.
I've had mine since 2017 and still going strong. I use it for PC gaming @ 4K 60p
Nothing compares to the quality of the OLED IMO. It's breathtaking compared to others.

You have to be patient with sales as ironically Covid19 has pushed the prices up for many things out there. Especially used cars.

I reckon, you will get a good deal mid 2021 as the financial impact/recession will hit. (with respect as many people will be affected)

I bought the samsung Q70R 55 inch from bandhphoto in USA this time last year. Beautiful TV, and I use it for HTPC and gaming. The 4k is excellent, but we rarely use it. I have it set to 120hz for 1080p gaming all the time. I would get more benefit from the TV from console gaming, and the tv supports freesync but i have a nvidia card.
I did have buyer regret for the first day when i bought it. I previously had a much better experience with the high frame rates from a 144hz gaming monitor, something specific for gaming. It depends on what you are playing too, as a lot of games have limited fps support, and some games are uncomfortable playing on big screens.
For example, torchlight 2 (top down RPGs) gave me a headache after about 30-40 minutes. the screen size is too big, too much action at one time for the size and scale. FPS, well you better have a decent table/posture for the keyboard and mouse. Adventure games are perfect, Neir Automata was the first game i played (with the fps unlock, otherwise it was clear theres something borked with the game) and now im playing shadow of war and division 2 which are really suitable for couch gaming and the TV.

The second thing that made me regret is having to spend the initial 1-2 hours of setting up the TV. a monitor you can take straight out of the box. Certain settings need to be checked for UHD to work, game modes, motion blurring and the wealth of recommended settings did not help enjoying the purchase in the initial stages. A lot of it was gimmicky in the end. HDR and UHD is designed for the specific content, and doesnt do much for your regular viewing. We've used it for a few UHD youtube videos as a demo, and 1-2 movies and the rest is fine in standard definition. A lot of the settings are designed for netflix, bluray players etc. It took me a while to understand.

A year on, its a beautiful TV and I have grown to love it more and more because we use it for more than just gaming, but for the gaming side of things and satisfying playing at a high frame rate, i would have looked at a 27-32 inch gaming monitor with highest possible refresh rate for your budget and a decent stand or monitor arm (with length) for enjoying a game sessions on a panel made specifically for gaming.
