Jetski General Advice

Hi everyone,

Living in FNQ, I've got access to beach, islands and freshwater dams. Getting my jetski licence on Monday, but the search is heating up to buy.

It'll be my first jetski and just looking for tips.

My budget, around or under $10k seems to be landing on 2012+ seadoo etc. Not fussed on supercharged, but the 215hp skis seem to be a happy medium of not outgrowing the less powerful.

Total hours and service history highest priority, but are there some to avoid, known problems, things I should aim for?

It'll be a general cruising, not fishing or wake making.

  • Sea-Doo are the best in my opinion. I've owned a few of them, most supercharged, one spark. Had a Yamaha, didn't like it. The seadoos are easy to maintain, plenty of power, proper fibreglass hull in the years you are looking at. Best for cruising will be a 3 seater, GTX, rxt. Best for maximum fun is 2 seater spark.

If you find one you are serious about, have it checked over properly by someone who knows what they are doing. Supercharger needs to be rebuilt every hundred hours on the models you are looking at.

Also, something to keep in mind is the 2010/11 model has a weird orphan jet pump that is mounted to the ride plate instead of the hull, harder to work on and harder to get parts for.

Be aware that no powered water device is cheap to own, and they all need regular maintenance, and to have things addressed before they fail in a big way.

    • I'm aiming for 2012 and newer because that that, plus the reverse.

Do you think a 2012 GTX 3 seater for under $10k is possible?

Would you aim to stay under 100hours?

      • Hours don't bother me, the condition and how it's been maintained does. I've seen low hour skis that were absolute rubbish, and high hour ones that were immaculate.

Should be able to get something around that mark, doubtful under $10k, you may have to travel, and I imagine prices will only get higher coming into summer.

  • Remember to get insurance for both the ski and the trailer.

Unlikely in FNQ but if there are several months that you will definitely not use the ski then tell the insurance company for cheaper rates.
