Seeking recommendations on dual band router <$200

Our Optus-provided router has performed well for years, but now the 2.4GHz band is falling over on a regular basis.
I'm looking to replace it - and good 2.4GHz coverage is a must. We also have a lots of little devices (5 Home minis/nests and 4 echo3 dots, ipads, phones, etc), but no need for 'gaming' performance.

I saw MSY has AC1900 TP-Link Archer A8 and AC1750 Asus RT-AC66U for just under $150.

Would you recommend either of these or suggest an alternative?

  • Yes I use the Archer A9 for my clients or sometimes the new TP-Link VC321 Hybrid with 4g failover. Good, reliable router

    • thanks - I'll look into the A9

Unless you live in a small apartment or a house, I strongly suggest a mesh wifi system. You may have to stretch your budget a little bit, but IMO they are well worth the money. Single routers can only go so far, especially in the 5Ghz band.

Some mesh routers can be linked via ethernet, ideal if you have ethernet ports in your house. But even if you don’t, mesh routers can still provide a far greater coverage and speed than a single router can. Whats more, you can often add new nodes to expand coverage later on.

I have a Netgear Orbi system and quite happy with the performance. But they are a little pricier. TP-Link Deco M series is cheaper but have good reviews.

    • thanks - I've ordered the Archer A9 - in my place the router has a central location, I think I just need a good one.

I am looking at 3 units of the Deco M5 for my father's house since the NBN is at the front of the house and my current solution to get internet to his tv at the back of the house is powerline adaptor -> ethernet cable -> old router -> magic
