PS5 Game Upgrades from PS4 Potential Issues

Hey everyone,

I'm super excited for the next gen and am also excited to see a lot of PS4 titles are getting free upgrades to PS5. However, I'm starting to get the impression that these free shinier upgrades from PS4 versions to PS5 won't necessarily transfer save data from PS4 as the game is just too altered at certain levels as to create enough of a difference to render save compatibility difficult to achieve. (examples: Spiderman and Yakuza Like a Dragon).

The idea of buying the PS4 games at a cheaper price and getting the PS5 experience is appealing but keep in mind some of these titles will not have the PS5 upgrade available day one for PS4 buyers. Are you ready to sink dozens of hours into a title to finally get the opportunity to upgrade to PS5 and risk not having your save data compatible? What are you thoughts?

  • It's not like I'll remember to upload those saves before trading my PS4 in anyway.

    • Don’t they automatically upgrade?

      • You’d think but I think I’ve lost them when I upgraded to the Pro anyway. I pay fir PS*, maybe I just forgot to turn sync on.

  • Hmmm interesting. The only game I have pre-ordered at the moment is Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. I got the PS4 version because it was cheaper. I’m gonna have to do a bit more research.

    • Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla launches on November 10 for PS4 and November 12 for PS5 so it won’t be an issue for me.

  • Some games will receive an upgrade and have save data available like Spider Man Miles Morales. Article.

  • I think the reason Yakuza doesn't allow save transfers is because the game was already released in Japan and Sony didn't give the feature to devs that far back or whatever. I assume most games coming out now will have save transfers.

  • "It’s a confusing situation, and one that probably won’t get ironed out until we see the PS5 in action. If you intend to start a big, expansive game on the PS4 and finish it on the PS5, however, be aware that you may have to change your plans."
