How to connect Asus RT-AX88U Router with TPG

TPG will tell you that its not possible to use another router with their service and that you need to run it as a access point through their archer modem/router, this is BS.

Bought the RT-AX88U and called TPG tech who told me i couldn't use my new router. Right. Did some research and followed below instructions and its all working.

Im on 100/40, just ran my speed test on a wireless PC about 10 metres away from the router and I got 108/37.

Pretty good outcome. Here is the speed test: https://www.speedtest.net/result/10183923912.png

    Ok

    • This, what are we discussing?

It just sounds like gloating and yelling saying "yes I did it"

      • No im not gloating. I was trying to help many other tpg users who use OzBargain, who have had similar issues. If it didnt affect you why would you even engage. Keyboard warrior right?

As simple as the process sounded, it wasnt and it didn't help that tpg said it wasn't possible.

        • TPG are right in saying "you need VLAN tagging", they use VLAN 2 for internet. But do you expect TPG or any other business to know about every single product on the market?

ASUS have made it easy, but the way you make it sound, you need a rocket scientist degree to follow 2 steps.

I think most if not ALL Ozbargainers can use Google and find that forum post if they need help.

FYI, I'm with TPG on HFC with a BYO router.

    a) of course you can plug in any router.

    b) the issue is not connecting a router for data traffic, it's getting the SIP settings to use a landline telephone.

The TP-link Archer router supplied by TPG has a "hidden" administrative account with a username of "su", as distinct from the "admin" account you normally see. The SIP settings are not visible on the "admin" account, they are only visible on the "su" account. The password for the su account is meant to be only accessible to TPG.

For anyone who wants the SuperUser (su) login details, you can find them here.

    • I dont need a landline phone so its not a problem.

Are you saying the SU credentials are whats required to sign in with other routers?

I just followed the instructions in the link i provided.

No I'm saying if you want to use a landline, you use the su credentials to login to your old router and get all the SIP details that you enter into your new router. It will be on the "telephony" page of the TP link, which is only visible to the su account.

My point is that SIP telephony is the only gotcha. Connecting a router simply to use without telephony is a trivial exercise.

Well, any compatible router model/brand would work - No surprises there. As stated above TPG has their su login and admin menu in their Archer routers and probably the best option if you are not technically minded as they would not support BYO routers with config or hardware faults and you will be left to troubleshoot those yourself.

    • As simple as the process sounded, it wasnt and it didn't help that tpg said it wasn't possible.

  • You can connect any router to the router supplied by TPG or any other service providers. Essentially, it's a router to router connection, and your devices will be connected to your new router. Topographically, it looks like this:

Internet <~> tpg router <~> Asus router <~> your devices.

You'll need to change the Lan IP network addressing of the TPG router so that it doesn't clash with your Asus router.

    • As simple as the process sounded, it wasnt and it didn't help that tpg said it wasn't possible.

      • yep. definitely possible. I've been running this config for over 10 yrs now, with different routers.

        • Sorry i think we are talking about two different connections.

In referring to internet <> asus router <> devices

They kept telling me it wasnt possible as i needed a vlan router. But the link i provided proved it could be done and shows the lack of expertise at tpg.

          • @regblade: It's not a lack of expertise. They just don't support it, so they will not give you any information about how to do it (or encourage people to do it).

@lunchbox99: Im pretty sure it was a lack of expertise. The tech guys exact words "sir im a network engineer and this is 100% not possible".
