Aussie Broadband Router

Noob question. Looking to move to aussie broadband from optus wireless 4g. Im HFC and I need a router.

Should i just bite the bullet and get the router for 149 from them or do you recommend buying one myself?

Thanks,
Shane

Being a new connection, if I was you I would use the ABB recommended or supplied router.

HFC is probably the worst of the fixed line NBN technologies therefore you don’t want to be in a position where you run into connectivity issues using a random model router and Aussie can’t support it and want you to obtain a supported router anyway.

HFC is the worst? Are you forgetting FTTN??

      Completely disagree.
HFC NBN works REALLY WELL for the majority of NBN customers.
But, and it's a big but, when it's bad it can be very difficult to fix.

Most of my friends on HFC-NBN have no problems getting great speeds all the time.

If you're a noob, then their router. If not, then buy your own router.

The HFC connection goes into the NTD/Arris box and your router distributes the connection to your devices, so it really can be almost any router (just check it supports "NBN").

Aussie BB doesn’t use credentials. I believe they use Netcomm routers. It’s ok, but it doesn’t have the best wifi performance.

I would recommend a TP-link router AC1900, Archer A9 or similar from Officeworks or Harvey Norman.

These are so easy to setup from the TP-Link app.

Or, you could go with the TP-link Deco M5 mesh routers. Again using the Deco app, the router will automatically detect that you are on a Dynamic IP connection. You just have to follow the prompt on the screen!

    • I used an ancient Netgear D6200 with HFC on Aussie and you are correct. No login required, just plug and play 👍

    • ABB also sell Google Nests as well if you need better WiFi coverage. As a fttn user I have my Netcomm bridged to my Nest.

      • I have tried google nest recently, it was awful compared to the original google wifi. I had so much trouble with it…it may have been faulty

Thanks folks. A decade long infrastructure project and this is the result.. fun times!

  • For an appartment or small home the ABB router is perfect (because of the weaker wifi). It's plug & play and if you need support, ABB knows everything about them.
If you want to play around, need/want more features, better wifi, mesh etc. get your own.

  • My advice is to not get the one from Aussie as it has questionable WIFI. One way to check WIFI is the AC rating. AC1200, 1600,1900 etc. The higher the better. Also as trite as it sounds. If it has external aerials.

    • Thanks for info. I already booked in ABB. Not a fan of waiting..

I'll update here when it's installed and what speeds are like.

  • Never got back here.. No dramas with ABB. Download speeds are around 80-90 most days.

    • Hi OP, why did you end up going with the ABB plan over iiNet or Telstra or TPG?
Moving house soon and not sure with ISP to go with. I already have an iiNet NBN Modem/Router so just looking at plans.

  • Tbh, no real reason. I heard good things about abb. They had a deal for one month free. That's pretty much it.
