'Customised' but Seemingly Identical Products at Wildly Different Price Points

I seek the opinion of the hive mind. I'm in the market for some cheap but reliable dog clippers for infrequent but long-term use. Of course I am tempted by the el cheapo products, but I'm beginning to believe that a significant amount of the products available, particularly on Amazon, are in fact the same product with different trinkets.

Please review the products at the following links, noting the price-differences (I acknowledge they come with different accessory sets)

Are these the same (but different) product?

A search for 'dog clippers' on Amazon produces lots of products that seem to be based off of this one model.

Can anybody elaborate on what is at work here? Is it common practice for manufacturers to sell generic products modified to a certain brand, which will then be on-sold at quite a variety of price points in different 'packages'? Are there substantial differences in the making of the products that actually justify the price differences? Would I be crazy for buying anything other than the cheapest one?

For all ye silent electors out there, please leave a comment to go with your poll vote, if you don't mind.

Same base model, but the alterations are substantial and may justify the price difference

Look at mattresses as an example, almost impossible to compare despite made by the same folks.

Alibaba and to an lessor extent Aliexpress offers custom branding on products at volume. There are dozens of "sellers" on OzB who just pay to brand a product and sell thru Amazon.

I'm pretty sure one of those "work from home and make $1000/day" adds shows you how to set it up. You best bet is to use www.tineye.com or Google reverse image search to look up if the product is on Aliexpress for much (much) cheaper.

  • Spend the extra cash and get a good brand.
First get a powered one not a battery operated one.
Cheap ones have cheap blades they will be fine for the first times but after that… Plus cheapies overheat quickly, not something that you want you dog to feel. I have trained as a dog groomer.
We use Shear Magic Tuffy 3000 same shears we used in my TAFE course. Excellent though hard to find at the moment due to CV-19. Andis and Wahl make great clippers as well.
