JB Hifi Don't Allow Gift Cards for PS5 / XBSX Pre-Ordering (Update: Policy Changed)

So I just received a text message that my spot in queue has been confirmed to pre-order the PS5 at JB Hifi. However, I'm not allowed to pay with gift cards? Is this normal? Isn't a gift card just like cash.

    • They saw the writing on the wall with Choice and the ACCC starting to weigh in.

        Nothing to do with ACCC
        Media was contacting them
As i have previously stated my friend works at head office in Games department.

It was a PR nightmare only, they were within their legal rights (They even checked) but have backed down due to public pressure only.

Retailers can't pick and choose which items are eligible for gift card redemption if it's not defined in the original terms and conditions at the time of purchase.

            • @jimbobaus: So they are well within their rights to not accept gift cards on any products at any of their stores?

It's like Itchy & Scratchy money except… fun. I guess I'll take eleven hundred dollars worth.

@jimbobaus: If you were right, what would prevent them from selling discounted gift cards (to encourage a lot of people to buy them) and once they sell enough them to say you can use them only on selected items nobody wants?

See how ridiculous it sounds? They simply cannot do it unless they state it in terms and conditions before you buy them.

It is not same with cash only or card only, because if they don't accept my cash, I can use it with EB Games or another seller. I cannot do the same with their gift cards.

Once again not true. The terms and conditions on the GCs are a contract, you can’t change them retrospectively, end of story. Companies say all sorts of things that are not legally correct. They had no legal leg to stand on and they recognised it. End of story.

            @jimbobaus:

No different from Cash Only or Card Only

            So legally wrong it’s exasperating.

Regulating agencies stated repeatedly they were within their rights

Now you’re making things up. I don’t believe this had happened, point to a statement from a “regulating” agency.

but you continue to state you know the law

I’ve got 20+ years private sector experience as a commercial lawyer with a focus on consumer and competition law.
            How about you?

@jimbobaus: Well, it looks like even Choice came out and said that JB Hi-Fi is likely in breach of consumer law by restricting usage of their gift cards.

“Gift cards are meant to operate like cash. Any onerous restrictions on gift card use have to be clearly explained at the time of purchase [of the gift cards],” CHOICE’s Julia Steward told Byteside. “JB Hi-Fi has clear terms and conditions for gift cards with no information about restrictions.”

  • Edit: oops, updated JB text already been posted

I got an idea for the op. How about you actually pay cash for the console like everyone else in the world. You could use yr cards for peripherals/ games later after the dust from release has settled.

    • Considering you can get discounted JB Gift cards @ 5% off, it's very much worth it to use it for the console.

  • Now the thread will slowly vanish into non existence, I write to you today to say goodbye to this thread, rip.

Good riddance to this thread. I was dismayed to see how many people like the idea of deception and borderline theft.

Tbh they probably didn't, they just probably work for the government, where the oppositions idea is trash regardless if it is good idea, it's the oppositions, and it's trash. NBN for example.

I assume everyone that cared about this has never had real problem in their life?

    • what?

      • I said
        (profanity) you, (profanity) face..

        Better?

The underlying problem here is jb's system doesn't allow automatic acceptance of gift cards. The new policy is a workaround.

I rang them a week or two ago about a price match and said I wanted to pay using gift cards. They said they couldn't accept it. The quote that they would send via email must be paid for using credit card. So I'm waiting (in Melbourne) for stores to reopen… :/

    • just pay by cc then submit a claim? don't feel like they are going to reopen anytime soon.

      • Don't think they'll honor that. They seem to be making an exception for this ps5, but doubt they will do the same with iPhone. :/

  • It would seem like this existing option to pay for console units upfront and then claim back afterwards via Sales line gift card redemption request is now no longer working.

  • Does anyone know if you can use a physical Jb Gift Card to purchase eGift card from the online store? e.g. Using 5 x $100 physical gift card to combine and purchased 1x $500 eGift Card?

    • Yes, it works. I've done it before.
