QNAP TS-231K Vs Synology DS218 (not DS218+)

What would you choose amongst the two and why please?

  • What do you plan on using the NAS for? At first glance I like the Synology because it has 2GB RAM and a 64bit processor compared to 1GB and 32bit in the QNAP.

    • Not a media server. Mainly RAID mirror for data back up from current internal drive, and very light file sharing (good to have, not necessary).

Initial intention was to have an ext SSD drive connected to wifi's USB3, but decided not to:
      1. Data security (encrypted connected directly to the WWW)
      2. Slow caching files.

I believe ram is upgradeable on both.

      • +1

Neither have upgradeable RAM so you're limited at either 1GB DDR3 or 2GB DDR4. The QNAP has the benefit of dual LAN but I don't think it's going to be something you'll need. So I think the better RAM, better CPU and in my opinion better software would make the Synology a better option.

        • oh thanks. then the DS218 is a no brainer.

  • if what clear said is true then yeah no brainer. pick the one with more ram

what i like about qnap, i HEARD, you can connect a monitor and keyboard to the unit and boom it become like pc
whilst with syno, you need to connect remotely

    i have old syno
