At What Mileage to Replace Car Tyres?

After how many km, roughly, do people normally replace the tyres on their car? Based on what I've read I've seen around the 40,000 - 50,000km mark. Is this a fairly good 'rule of thumb?'

Also asking specifically in relation to Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres if anyone has any experience with them and their longevity.

Thanks

So true. Why is every golf/Mercedes in a f1 race around Bankstown?

      • In Lebanon, roads and cars are terrible. Hard to race there. In Sydney, it's a different story. There's a lot of opportunity and people have money, especially the drug dealer hoons.

I nearly got trampled by drivers of a Hilux and a decked out Ford Ranger who thought they were driving a push bike and mounted the median strip. I called out to them and even got a middle finger from one of them because apparently it was my fault for being a pedestrian.

        • "The finger"- or was it a pistol muzzle ?

          • @Peck:

They were tradies. So it would've been a pipe wrench.

  • I purchased a used VW Jetta 2012 model with 65K on the engine. All 4 tires were still from factory and had good tread. Was told I should replace them all due to being old even though they had plenty of tread.

    • Yes got to replace when the tread goes hard, happens a lot of fleet cars.
You can sell your old tyres on FB market place for $50, if the tyre place lets you keep them :)

I had Michelin Primacy 4 on my car for 100,000km, just over 3 years. I'd say I'm a pretty defensive driver and I break gently, ease around corners etc. I did the Jax tyre maintenance plan and rotated and aligned on schedule - I really think this contributed to the longevity of my tyres. I had cheapies on previously that lasted under 40 k. My partner has the same Michelin tyres on her car and they will need replacing approaching 70 k. The Pilot Sport will grip better but wear out quicker.

  • I replace my tyres on a small hatchback at 54k

  • AU Falcon Ute, new Hankooks Feb 2018, half that time it had a Slide-On Camper on the tray, they are half worn and I have been taking it extra easy (normally take it easy) as they don't feel as good as they did, between home and the closest big town 96k's and one windy range 160k's- to Cairns 2 Windy ranges … had a wheel alignment and rotate early march this year, front end still good and dampers working well, if I had a job I'd replace them.

  • OP I had MPSS before getting the MPS4 in June this year (MPS4 is their replacement) and I got 40,000km out of them. No track days but driven with spirit from time to time.. after all you wouldn't be buying such a nice tyre if you weren't planning on pushing them every now and then..

  • I had a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 3 in 245/45/18 on a large FWD sedan. Fair bit of highway driving and with a balance and alignment every 10,000 km. I replaced them at 40,000 km and they still had around 3 mm of tread remaining. I was happy with that.

They are great tyres - I put another set of PS3s on that car, and I've just put a set of PS4s on my latest sedan (not the PS4S unfortunately, as they were out of stock Australia wide, and I needed them in a hurry).

  • Hi guys - has anyone had experience with Michelin PS4 as run-flat tires? if yes please comment as i need to replace tires on my car and thinking of going PS4 in run-flat (my car can take this only).

  • Depends on:

    • Tyre brand / sticky-ness
    • Tyre pressure
    • Tyre size
    • Weight of car
    • Driving style (lead foot? on the brakes too much?)
    • Driving conditions (highway/city)

    anywhere from 5,000 to 50,000km
