Truly, Truly, Great - imo!

The Picture of Dorian Gray
Wilde’s only novel, first published in 1890, is a brilliantly designed puzzle, intended to tease conventional minds with its exploration of the myriad interrelationships between art, life and consequence. From its provocative Preface, challenging the reader to belief in ‘art for art’s sake’, to its sensational conclusion, the story self-consciously experiments with the notion of sin as an element of design. Yet Wilde himself underestimated the consequences of his experiment, and its capacity to outrage the Victorian establishment. Its words returned to haunt him in his court appearances in 1895, and he later recalled the ‘note of doom’ which runs like ‘a purple thread’ through its carefully crafted prose.

Frankenstein
Mary Shelley began writing Frankenstein when she was only eighteen. At once a Gothic thriller, a passionate romance, and a cautionary tale about the dangers of science, Frankenstein tells the story of committed science student Victor Frankenstein. Obsessed with discovering the cause of generation and life and bestowing animation upon lifeless matter, Frankenstein assembles a human being from stolen body parts but; upon bringing it to life, he recoils in horror at the creature’s hideousness. Tormented by isolation and loneliness, the once-innocent creature turns to evil and unleashes a campaign of murderous revenge against his creator, Frankenstein.

Frankenstein, an instant bestseller and an important ancestor of both the horror and science fiction genres, not only tells a terrifying story, but also raises profound, disturbing questions about the very nature of life and the place of humankind within the cosmos: What does it mean to be human? What responsibilities do we have to each other? How far can we go in tampering with Nature? In our age, filled with news of organ donation genetic engineering, and bio-terrorism, these questions are more relevant

I agree, honestly this is not a deal

    • I love how Project Gutenberg e-books have X-Ray for my Kindle

From reading comments on similar posts, it seems only a small percentage of ozbargainers object to these posts. I personally like picking these up through Amazon when they pop up here. Mods - I’ll leave it in your hands.

i agree, this is very convenient to add to a kindle rather than going to a website, downloading the ebook, converting it into a relevant format then sending to your e-reader.

  • are thes eyeglasses?

  • Selecting The Picture of Dorian Gray novel off the shelf seemed to set off a small alarm at my local library lol. I saw the 1950 movie and it's a great film. Book is more risque and deals with same sex relationships. Almost all mention of this was removed in the movie.

    • As the description pointed out the book came back to bite Wilde in Court .. helping to send him to goal for 'Indecency'!

As homosexuality was illegal in the UK until 1965 .. the movie producers prolly didn't want to risk it again! :-)

      • Yep, almost two different stories. Movie was made in the fifties so had to comply to those standards.

So why is it that I continue to become more haggard and boring with age, while the Picture of Dorian Grey remains a well-loved timeless classic?

That's not the way it's meant to work. Is it?
