Best universal full sized "family" non gaming laptop with an IPS panel for around $1500

Hi,

I want to find a higher range best value laptop.

The requirements are really basic, the heaviest task will be video and photo editing (Corel Video Studio and Photoshop), no gaming.

I had a Dell Inspirion 7559 until now, it had a terrible build quality, the case is too soft. Now the display and webcam are failing due to the connecting cables falling apart inside, thus, the need for a new one.

I want a good quality display (IPS), USB 3.1 and just want the best value for money.

Should I just wait for the best deal published here on ozbargain? What is the best strategy of finding a good deal?

For family use, get a desktop. Will be better at a lower price.

  • Laptop is not an option, unfortunately. I need to use it on sofa, on kitchen table, in garage, when cooking, outside on pergola.

Why? Get a desktop, and a tablet for your cooking adventures.

      • I very rarely use computer at a desk. I mostly use one on a sofa. I would be happily using a desktop. It used to be a thing for me 20 years ago in my gaming/freelancing days where I would sit at a desk in front of a computer for hours. Now, I only use a computer casually, often in front of a TV. Thanks for this option, sometimes we don't notice very obvious things but it is not going to work.
In 10 years, when we will all have consoles, essentially a screen with remote computing - maybe, but not just right now.

        • All good, it just seems everyone's first option is laptop for some reason. I have a number of laptops and a desktop, and for anything more than watching YouTube, always go for the desktop.

Your hardest thing is probably going to be finding something with a good screen for video/photo editing. Until you get up to quite expensive ones, the screens always seem to be the first area of cost cutting.

I'm personally a fan of dell and Lenovo when it comes to laptops, Lenovo especially for build quality. I still have an old i5 x230t that is still going like a champion.

    • I found two options: https://www.amazon.com.au/Display-Graphics-Backlit-Keyboard-…
      https://www.amazon.com.au/HUAWEI-Matebook-Screen-Multi-Scree…
      Are those good?

I would opt for something with a bit more power and more RAM (16GB RAM). The Acer uses a Ryzen 7 3700U while the Huawei uses a Ryzen 5 3500U, while fine for most basic everyday tasks if you want to do heavier stuff as u say like video and photo editing (Corel Video Studio and Photoshop) then opt for something with a bit more grunt.

Maybe look at the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 (14", AMD Version) or like the Asus Zenbook UX425 (Intel version) or the Ryzen version: UM425.

  • Thinkpad L15

  • What about a MacBook or Mac Mini? Apple is no guarentee against viruses and bugs over time, but you probably will have to do far less tech support and their data will probably be safer if they choose a Mac. IBM uses Macs in their own corporate day to day dealings, because it's cheaper in the long run than PCs, from needing less tech support required. If the family can wait a bit longer then they could get a first generation ARM MacBook, wouldn't that be exciting.

  • Have you considering something like an Hp Probook 450? Maybe even a used Lenovo Thinkpad T series?

  • How about this https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Huawei-Matebook-13-2020-AMD-Ryze…

Laptops with Ryzen 7 4800H do very well for Video editing/photoshop.
