Centrelink Rent Assistance/Parenting Payments

So I'm close to giving birth but I am single however I'm so greatful to the father of my baby for his support with this child as I was previously living in a property that wasn't suitable for a new baby so he offered to sign a lease for a property with me so I am able to rent (as I wouldn't be approved if I applied alone) because he lives with his grandparents so it wasn't an issue for him and he pays for half my rent, he is trying to set up success for our baby as he never got this in return however when applying for parenting payment and when being questioned about accommodation, I am unsure how to go about it, I know I'll be asked who I live with, do I put myself? If so would Centrelink want to see my lease agreement? They'll also question how much I pay ect if they find out baby daddy is on the lease they'll think he lives here? Even if his license address is somewhere else? So many questions but I don't wanna be punished for simply having a good relationship with the father on my baby.

Only helpful comments please! No judgemental comments thanks.

  • If he is on the lease you could explain that he is on there because you couldnt get a lease on your own, but he does not live there, and that he is contributing half the rent as a form of child support.

  • +3

This situation complicates child support and Centrelink because they may think you are living together but trying to be dodgy.

Your rent assistance would probably be lower because you are paying less rent.

Maybe he could pay the same amount but instead pay for utilities, groceries, car, clothes, etc.

I recommend that you look into whether you were in a defacto relationship and/or are entitled to child support.

  • I would go to a Centrelink office in person and explain the situation. They will be the ones best placed to know what you are entitled to, and how to put it in the forms.
