95pt 2016 Geoff Merrill Graymoor Coonawarra Cabernet $19.99/btl ($55 RRP) + $9.95 Delivery @ The Wine Collective

40

While their rebranding and merger with My Wine Guy has been somewhat disappointing, this looks like a decent deal. New members at TWC can get a 6-pack for $99.94 (plus delivery) after the $20 referral credit, or $16.66/bottle.

A magnificent rendition of the variety; the bouquet shows blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco and subtle spice characters on the nose, leading to a wonderfully weighted palate that’s flavoursome and persistent. It’s refined and sumptuous at the same time, finishing impressively long and delicious. 5 stars.

“There’s a list below of three New Zealand people who charge for reviews. One of them, Sam Kim, doesn’t claim to be a wine journalist but a consultant with 20 years’ experience, who provides a paid service to wineries. His website declares this, but the problem is, his scores and reviews are used by retailers and others without any disclosure.”

Given that’s the only review of the wine, I’d say the $55 RRP is very overinflated. Having said that, Geoff does make good wines (I work in the industry and own a wine bar). All I’m saying is that it might not be the bargain that it appears to be.

    • Very interesting regarding Sam Kim. I often notice that his review scores are generally higher than others. Agreed that the RRP is probably inflated, but given this is made by Geoff and the other reviews, I think it's still a fairly decent deal.

An intense and powerful wine. Red cassis fruits, dried herbs and complexity from ageing. Great acidity and oak treatment in typical Geoff Merrill style.

    • I also find that they're a really particular taste, a whole lot of incredibly boozy, weirdly flavoured wines that just don't do it for me at all. Tend to taste like they're about 16% alcohol, I had a reserve shiraz from many years ago that tasted vaguely like vanilla coke.

There's a whole lot of heavily discounted Merrill wines on the site too, for those who do like them it seems a good deal.
