Dell S2721DGF - HDR and 165hz

I purchased a S2721DGF in the recent deals and have an issue which i believe can be rectified

When selecting HDR in Windows 10 my monitor refresh rate drops back to 60hz. see link https://imgur.com/a/s9vJjXW

Does anyone know why this is the case?

I am running an RX580 8gb using displayport

After selecting HDR if I go monitor display settings and select 165hz it remains at 60hz after changes are applied.

Any idea as to what's going on?

Thanks in advance

After switching to HDR, manually change refresh rate setting at Advanced display settings > Display adapter properties > Monitor.

        Displayport?

          yep using display port

  • Maybe have a look at the monitor settings itself in case that limits it. I have the same monitor and don't have any issues with that so maybe changing the monitor settings could help.

    • in the monitor settings

under display i have smart HDR enabled (as desktop)
under game i have preset modes - standard
      response time - extreme

i have played with each of these settings and tried factory reset and it has been no different

    Are you running multiple monitors?

    • i do shortyX and i have just found that is the problem… i unplugged the other and bang 165hz. Surely you can have 2 monitors running at different refresh rates?

edit: wow the google rabbit hole is deep on this one. would think a setup with different refresh rates would be pretty common these days. why is it never straightforward!

      • Does the motherboard have integrated graphics? If so, you could run the second monitor from that.

        • it has DVI so i will need to purchase a DVI to HDMI adapter. The annoying thing is i use the other ports to my TV in the lounge (currently disconnected whilst investigating) also so the setup is not how i want it

@deanosh: Why not just plug another computer or box into the TV in the lounge. Doesn't running games full screen make videos lag anyway with multi monitor?

Its a hardware limitation, its not very well known. The pixel clock on the graphics card has to accomodate the lowest performing monitor when you have hardware accelerated material on it.

The only solution is to have separate pixel clocks (not done anymore due to being expensive). Or separate graphics card for the lower performing monitor. Simple as that. Some cards have two pixel clocks often split over DP/DP/HDMI DVI/DP or DP/DP/DP DVI/HDMI , but you will run into this issue if they are different outputs still, IE mixing DVI-D with DP or DP with HDMI, or HDMI with DP.

        • I found this whilst searching last night also. Pretty disappointing as there would be a lot of people in the same situation. There were a few debating when sale was on whether to buy one or two S2721DGFs or just have a cheaper secondary monitor for browsing etc

And as it states that it is not very well known, you wouldn't know until you go to plug in.

But in saying that, in standard dynamic resolution, The Dell will work at 165hz with the secondary operating at 60hz so it is more of an HDR problem

        • Dang… this means I will need to get another monitor that matches the S2721DGF. I was thinking of running a professional monitor 100% AdobeRGB screen which are mostly 60Hz next to it.

  • HDR 400 is actually useless and is no better than SDR

    • Yeah i keep the HDR on this monitor off but the upside is that the colours normally are great

      • Keeping HDR off is the best solution as i can keep it overclocked at 165hz with all others at 60hz. Is there a reason why you leave it off?

        • The HDR is unimpressive but the upside is that because it has HDR compatability the normal colour range is great

    • Could you explain why?

    • edit: double post

  • When turning the the HDR on, the screen looks quite washed out?
