Victoria, Metcard: No point in 5 x Daily Fare tickets?

Someone just pointed this out to me … it didn't use to be this way

10 x 2 hour ticket and 5 x Daily tickets cost the same amount.

According to the metcard website

"No more than two 2 hour periods will be deducted per day. For example, a ticket validated at 9.05am will expire at 12pm. If the ticket is used again at 1.30pm on the same day, it will then be valid until 3am the following day."

So, apart from saving on validating effort, the 10 x 2 hour ticket may be better for a lot of people, on the off chance they occasionally need to travel only once that day, by public transport …

To the moderators, would this be okay to post as a bargain? Not sure how many Metcard users are aware of this …

  • You're exactly right. By validating your two-hour metcard twice in a day, it becomes a daily ticket.

I was rather surprised when I found out but it has been this way for years.

  • Didn't realise 5 x Daily = 10 x 2hour. Maybe submit this as a deal? Id give it a +1.

  • Has anyone tried this out? Because it sounds like an error in wording. The description for a single 2-hour ticket still reads that it can only be validated once, but when you buy a 10 pack, each can be validated twice? Doesn't really make sense…

If this is true, 10 pack of 2 hours ticket would probably work out to be cheaper than weekly or monthly ticket over the long run, even if you use public transport twice a day, five days a week without break.

  • Yeah, 2 hour (10 x 2hour) validated twice definitely turns into a daily. Been working for at least 3 or 4 years.

  • Well can a weekly ticket for Zone 1 be used across Zone 2? If so, that's another advantage of buying weekly ticket than 10 x 2.

    • Oops, I meant to say can a weekly ticket for Zone 1 be used across Zone 2 ON WEEKENDS..

      • I wouldn't think that would work. You would need to buy the weekend saver.

        • It says on the terms and conditions, weekly ticket allows travel in zones 1 & 2 on weekends, regardless of the zone of the ticket … :P

          • @SomeGuyOnOzB: That's great. I wonder what other tricks there are.

  • Hmm … true :)

this is all kind of confusing :P

  • I think you could purchase a combination of 10 x 2 hour ticktes and 5 weekend daily tickets, if you are a regular traveller :)

    • That's exactly what I do and I'm not a regular traveller. Just keep the two tickets with me for when I need to travel (one 10x2hr ticket and one 5xWeekEnd ticket). You get the fares cheaper by buying bulk (comparable to the current Myki "discount"). Buying any other way (unless a longer term user. eg. monthly, yearly) is just a waste of money and you miss out ont he flexibility/convenience too! Been doing this since the multi tickets came out. Even better when you can buy them before a price rise (lose that "benefit" with Myki). Only a problem for people prone to losing stuff eg. tickets… For people like me who have been doing this Myki is actually a negative and provides no cost savings!

If you validate one 2 hour ticket after 6pm you can use it till 3am the next morning too! It's hilarious when you see a bunch of people waiting at the train gate for the 6pm tickover to validate their tickets (esp. a crowd going to the footy!) ;-)

  • Except if you use public transport all day then you really need a daily.

For example, I use a train to get to uni every day, but during the day also use trams to get around the city. So if I used a 2 x two-hourly I would be spending more because of the all the times between going in/going out.

    • 2nd time you swipe it, they don't just give you a 2 hour validation. They give you a till the end of the day validation.

But if you don't have to swipe twice, some weekdays, that's where the saving comes in.

  • As of Jan 1,

Weekly/Monthly/Yearly tickets are not valid on every zone on weekends.

    • Deleted previous post. Didn't realise I was replying to a post 2 years ago! Please note that Weekly, Monthly and Yearly tickets can be used in both zones 1 and 2 without extra charge until Metcard is phased out.

  • heh I've been doing this for a very long time. I always buy 10x2 hour tickets. Sometimes I only sue them in he morning, sometimes in the afternoon as well, sometimes all day. xD

  • Been using 10x 2hr tickets for years! Got me through Uni at a financially tough time when I couldn't afford a monthly ticket. Still use them now to get to work. I only ever use them and 5x weekend saver tickets. I reckon Metcard has it right, and I'm DEF. not looking forward to Myki - I don't see any benefit.

  • also, if you validate a 2 hour ticket after 6pm it is valid until the last service that night, they makes a 10 x 2 hr, much better value than a 5 x daily…
