Got Rear-Ended, What Should I Do Now?

So I got rear-ended and only have third-party insurance. The guy has offered to pay to fix the dent in the car but do I still need to report it to the insurance or is that only necessary if I'm making a claim? Thanks.

3rd party is only for damage to others… Take his information and insurance

This is why you must get comprehensive! Because you can't trust other drivers to do the right thing. Also covers fire, theft and more!

  • Get a quote to fix and ask for his insurance details. If he doesn't have insurance ask for him to transfer the price of the quote to you.

Make sure you get a photo of his license, and his license plate, and get a contact number (make sure it works when you’re there)

Yep got it all. I actually forgot what info I needed to get in the moment but luckily he sent me the rego number and a photo of his licence when I called him. So now I just need a quote for repairs.

Next time I'm keeping a checklist of what info I need to exchange so I don't forget since this is my third time being rear-ended -.-

Lucky. Sounds like the person who hit you is actually a decent human being.

        • I wish I could say the same thing but he is being quite difficult. He tried to downplay the incident asking if he even hit me when I was in the car and clearly felt it. I didn't see any damage at first but still wanted his information anyway in case I find some damage later (which I did) but he was reluctant to give it out since he needed to know what the damages were. But I stayed persistent and he wrote his information down on paper and then before I read it, we parted ways and then I saw that he only wrote his name and number down.

          • @baskinghobo: Ahahahahahah unless you got his registration and full name I'm not sure what you can do

            • @Willco88: Well I got all the information now and I can verify it so I'm not concerned about it anymore. Only thing I can't verify is his registration number but since everything else is correct it should be fine.

              • @baskinghobo: Then if he won't pay tell your insurances company they should be able to find out his insurance company

                • @Willco88: Will that still be helpful even if I only got third party? I doubt it will come to that since he gave me all his details but I thought QCAT was my only option if things turn south.

                  • @baskinghobo: No you still tell your insurance what happened because his insurance will need to pay for you or you need to know who he is insured by

I would never give a photo of my license.

I would however let them see it and let them write down the details; or let them see it and only take a picture of the license number and my name if they didn't have a pen.

You took the correct first step by posting here on Australia's foremost bargain sharing community.

Please however put the price and store in the title.

    • he has forgotten to attach MS Paint drawing.. that's a big no no

      • Rip to me

Put your car into reverse & hit the accelerator

    Who is your insurer?

A lot of insurers will assist with not-at-fault incidents if you have the details of the other driver, which you have.

    Check it out.

    Half ya luck

  • Yikes. Can I ask what car?

It's a Mitsubishi lancer. Don't buy it, it's too long and parking is difficult. Also probably the reason why I keep getting rear ended :/

A lancer is too long and hard to park?
Man, how ever do those with medium-large sized vehicles manage :/

        • Yea i think the OP he's the one who can't drive; probably braking too soon got him rear ended…
