Sonos or Yamaha MusicCast for large open space and a couple of rooms.

Hi! Large open space with Kitchen, dining and living (TV). Thinking about 1 sound bar, 1 subwoofer and 4 extra small speakers. On top, an extra 2 small speakers for the office and the kids room. Any thoughts on the best multiroom system? Thx!

  • I have Sonos and highly recommend their speakers for sound quality, ease of setup, integration with multi-room setup and integration with online music services. I can't imagine a better system really.

  • Also another sonos user here. I haven't used any of the Yamaha musiccast stuff so can't speak to it at all.

I am pretty happy with my sonos set up. It's a little frustrating that it's limited on some functionality vs other brands (such as Bluetooth and casting abilities depending on what you buy and have). But I am very happy with the audio quality and user experience overall (for what I use).

I have a play:5, 2 play:1s, 2 symfonisk bookshelves, a sub and recently an arc soundbar for reference. Sure they are pricey but I personally think they are worth the premium.

May also be worth mentioning that there have been some somewhat recent actions made by the company that seem a bit I guess anticonsumer, but after some pressure, reversed some policies that were pretty poor. Likely won't affect any new purchasers (certainly for some time) but something to maybe keep in mind and look into before investing in the ecosystem :)

  • +1

You won't need extra, small speakers in that large room with a decent soundbar unless you want surround. Then most systems will only need two.

A dot, a mini or a smart screen would make more sense in the kitchen as they either take up less space or give you extra functionality (a screen, say for recipes). I would configure the kitchen smart speaker to play music though the lounge system.

An arc, Sonos Sub and your choice of two, matching Sonos rears would be your best bet for that space. While the Q950T sounds about as good but is better value, Samsung crippled Google voice support about a year ago, massively reducing it's utility in a smart home.

If you don't care too much about sound quality, even a Sonos beam will fill a room that size.

    • I agree. I have a Sonos playbar in a large kitchen/dining/lounge area and it is more than enough. If you wanted to do quasi 5.1 and have the space you could get a couple of Sonos One or Symphonisk to put somewhere at the rear. If you get either the Playbar or the new Arc I wouldn't bother with a sub.

I have 2 play ones in my 2.5 x 3 office, but frankly 1 is easily enough for this space.

I have 1 play 3 in my kids room, and that is enough for them.

  • I have a musiccast system, app is a little dated but it works fine.
