Best nbn Plan with Streaming Services

Hi, my parents need to finally move onto nbn as their cable internet will be cut off. I have tried comparing different providers, however, it has become a little difficult since they have certain non negotiables.

My parents currently have 500gb cable internet with telstra. I can't seem to find what speed they are currently on.. But I know they don't have or need the speed boost. I don't think they have very much usage as they currently don't stream. They pay $75/month.

They are paying $78/month for foxtel - sports, movies and entertainment. This recently went up from $58/month :-(

They are pensioners. I want to save them money. I had thought of kayo sports. I can currently get this with telstra for $15-$25/month for 12months. My brother has kindly offered access to his Netflix account for them. They love watching lifestyle based shows such as location, location, location and other real estate/home improvement shows. I'm not sure Netflix offers that.

Other issue is, they have an older TV. I thought about buying a Google chromecast (especially with the most recent online 6 months free Netflix deal), however, my parents like to record TV shows on their foxtel hard drive thingy. They also don't really have up to date phones to stream from.. So I'm not sure it would work great.

Basically, I'm after an nbn plan that includes home phone line, that will stream well. I don't understand the streaming world too well so I didn't know if there were other recording options available that will also help turn my parents TV into a smartish TV.. Like a telstra TV or fetch mini? (but I don't think those ones allow all the different types of streaming services).

In summary my parents need:
-nbn plan
-home phone line
-sports package (nrl, a-league mostly)
- entertainment for lifestyle based shows
- box for recording/turning TV into a smart TV for streaming.
-wanting to decrease bill from $153/month

Any help/suggestions would be great. I think I'm mostly stuck on how to get all the streaming options with some sort of device that will work on an nbn plan. Thanks

Any nbn 50 plan with a apple tv and kayo, binge. Doesn't record though, the foxtel box is easiest for oldies. But if streaming you don't need to record anyway, i havn't record anything for years and years.

    • We don't own any Apple devices so I don't think we could use the Apple TV, right?

My parents seem to love recording TV shows on foxtel. One other issue I didn't mention was, they were on TV the other week and they recorded their episode.. So they are a bit worried about losing that episode forever. Would you have any idea of how they can keep their episode forever if we got rid of the foxtel box?

      • Your screwed then, they will have to keep foxtel box, it's easiest to use my oldies are the same with recording, they won't get nbn and stream, but you don't need any other apple devices to own a apple tv 4k.
It's a user pay world, ring foxtel cancellations they will negotiate my oldies do. Anyway Scommo is paying and us tax payers as i tell dad :)

  • ps, i have the opposite problem with my oldies in late 70's, dont want the nbn at all, they use a iPad with 60gb data a month, iPhone and have foxtel box for sport/movies etc. they record heaps.
All up about $105, dad has a old Telstra $15 plan with a nokia button phone mum has the iPhone.

    • Is the 60gb per month a data plan? Your parents don't seem to have a home line do they?

      • yeah data only, no home phone just mobiles.

If only my parents would give up their home phone.. They are too old school

          • @kimba88: My parents did when they retired about 12 years ago, has worked well for them. If they go out or travel you need one anyway.

            • @[Deactivated]: My parents have mobile phones.. But it's more or less keeping the home phone for incoming calls from friends/family that are still old school. I checked my parents phone bill and they only seem to make a couple of outgoing phone calls from the home line per month. Yet I can't convince them to give it up :-/

box for recording/turning TV into a smart TV for streaming.

Unfortunately this behaviour will limit how low your parents bill will be, not their internet cost. Hard to change a behaviour, so call up telstra and ask for a pensioner deal or something

    • I have just called telstra. They will not budge with anything. I just did a speed test.. I currently get 75mbps download speed and 5mbps upload speed @$75/month. If I stay with telstra for $75/month, they will have only 25/10 plan.. Which seems a little bit of a crazy downgrade for the same price.

I don't understand how recording TV is a limiter in how low the bill will be?

      • Well you want to lower the bill from $75/month internet and $78/month for foxtel, right? $75 a month for 50/20 internet is pretty standard price. You could cut $10/month if you go from unlimited to 500GB/month… So really to lower the bill you lower the Foxtel portion.

The entertainment for lifestyle based shows you maybe able to get Netflix/Stan/Binge/Prime for sub $20/month maybe.

Now your parents want sports package (nrl, a-league mostly). Assume Kayo will meet this requirement, costing you $25/month. You are now left with $29 of wiggle room to get a box for recording.

        That's why I said what I said

        • Thanks for clarifying. They were my thoughts but I wasn't too sure if it was possible. I'm just confused about what sort of box to buy to convert the TV into smart and record?

          • @kimba88: There isn’t one to do both

            • @[Deactivated]: Doesn't a fetch mighty do this? But only has some access to certain apps maybe?

If I got a google chromecast with Google TV, what recording device would you buy? Or should it not be needed?

  • You can get unlimited 50/20 plan for $75 and $5 for unlimited calls to all no's with iinett.

    • Everything has gone downhill with iiNet since they were bought by TPG

      • No problems here, what can go downhill lol, it either works or it doesn’t. 100/40 plan here and works as should.

  • Have a look into Foxtel broadband bundles.

    • That's a little cheaper than what we currently pay.. However, it's for new customers only :-(

      • Advise Telstra you no longer need the service. Give an end date then sign up under your or your mum’s name as a new customer.

Note you might lose any Telstra plus points because it’s a new account

        • New customers I think have an 'installation fee'. Also, wouldn't it go by street address?

  • I've seen on my parents account that they can get 9months of free binge. They can also get 1 month of free kayo. After that, they can have kayo for $15-$25/month for 12months by the looks of it.
I've been looking more into the new google chrome cast with Google TV. It seems it could be an option to upgrade their TV. However, I think they'll still want to be able to record. Is there a device that does this or should I hold off on the new google chromecast?

In regards to nbn plans, I'll keep doing my research, but my dad is now freaking out because he'll lose his bigpond email address he's always had. So it may look like we'll be downgrading speed by a lot and pay the same price potentially :-/ sounds horrid to me.. I feel like nbn is just a rip off

    • What shows do they want to record? Knowing this you might be able to tackle in a different way.

For example, shows on free to air channels could be rewatched in their respective yet annoying apps, which a Google TV should be able to install. (Note: sign in for your parents on each app. Free account)

If it is movie, the entertainment package should allow them watch movies on demand. Yes , they don't have to wait for the tv guide to tell them is on tv. They can just stream it anytime.

Sport matches I'm not sure, not a fan of it, but reckon kayo and the like offer replays on demand as well.

I've looked at fetch tv mighty spec. It will allow recoding of fee to air and their premium channels (whole lot is $20/mth). If your parents is okay just watching ESPN and not fox sports then it is worth looking into. Otherwise the box to me is a glorified PVR.

Lastly, my dad is like your dad with his email. He has never switched out of TPG for so many years because that's the last link to his old friends

      • Thanks for your feedback! I'm guessing it was mostly free to air TV shows they wanted to be able to record if there were two shows scheduled at the same time, etc.

My dad was also worried about losing his current recordings on the foxtel iq2 box.. Recently they were on TV and they wanted to keep that.. But last night, my partner was able to somehow figure out how to get that particular episode from the internet and put it onto the computer ready for usb storage - so I'm thankful for that since that could be a step in the right direction of giving up on his beloved expensive foxtel.

In regards to sport, they like watching foxsports for nrl and a league.. So espn wouldn't be a great option for them.

I guess if Netflix, kayo and what not are mostly on demand, then they shouldn't really have the need to be recording, etc.

I guess the positive if they stay with telstra for now is we can use up to 9 months of free binge and 1 month of free kayo. So that could be a good trial to see if on demand is going to work for them. It's just a shame that their internet speeds will be drastically decreased for the same price.

Last night I went ahead and put an order in for the google chromecast with Google TV and Netflix. They have an older TV, so hopefully this solhould be a nice little upgrade. I was still contemplating whether to upgrade their TV with one I purchased almost 2 years ago from here (I couldn't resist the $680 Samsung 55" TV that everyone was going crazy over on here in early 2019 on an eBay sale - and I've kept it in its box since turning it on to make sure it wasn't dead on arrival. My original plan was to use it when I moved out - but I've moved in with my partner who already has one).

        • I think you make the right choice. They will have a chance to familiarise all that while keeping Foxtel for now. Google TV is a one off cost with no subscription required. Once they get hang of on demand features, and they can self navigate, then your plan to reduce their ongoing cost will have more success.

Good luck. NBN is expensive for now. Hope it will be cheaper in future…

  • Vodafone TV boxes go cheap, and can record live tv via usb. They run android so they are easy to use. They have built in chromecast as well
I think. The telstra tv 2 can record and play live tv with a antenna and a usb as well so thats another option. Binge was doing free subscriptions with a telstra connection of up to 12 months so thats a option.

    • Go to jb hi fi or ring them and see what you can get for signing up to a bigpond plan through them. Internet prices have gone through the roof

    • I haven't really done any research into a Vodafone tv box. Do you need Vodafone to use it? Do they differ much from the new Google chromecast with Google tv?

OOo.. I didn't know binge were offering 12months..i wonder how you can get that. We were only offered 9months.

I went into jbhifi yesterday and they said because we are existing customers, they can't provide anything different or cheaper.

      • Na the vodafone box is unlocked. Im unsure tbh but you can install your own APKs/packages on it with no issues, the telstra tv on the otherhand is a locked down Roku box - but foxtel go is still cheaper regardless digitally as well

          That's good to know.

I just checked out the pricing for foxtel now and it still seems well overpriced
