Indoor TV Antennas. Do they work?

Hi all,

I do not have a antenna at my residence.

Has anyone used an indoor antenna?

If so, what were your results?

What brands did you try?

Should work. I've been successful in getting a TV signal simply by just holding onto the end.

Yeah they do. Bunny ears work but are a bit ugly.

I've used a mohu leaf in the past which also works and is less obtrusive but a bit more expensive.

  • I have tried the Aldi one. I have thrown out the Aldi one.

I download / stream my TV anyway, and have done for years, so the hassle of sorting it out wasn't worth the potential benefit.

My experience might not give an accurate estimation of what you should expect though - signal propagation is affected by a lot of factors and it's very likely most of those are different between my area and yours. Your best bet would be to ask your neighbours.

  • Just use a metal coat hanger, ozb antenna of choice

I find if there is a window between the antenna and the transmitter tower, I get better success in picking up the DVB-T channels. I used an antenna for digital TV with active amplifier, and even that the antenna placement is quite sensitive (need fine physical adjustment)

Got mine from dick Smith years ago. Look like this one https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/one-for-all-hd-amplified-indo…

Honestly, just stream it as long as your connection is stable and you have unlimited data.
Use the Freeview app and buy a Chromecast for your Tv.
I know it would seem like a pain as you need to have your phone with you but it honestly isn't that bad. It's better than having an indoor antenna and cables all over the place in my opinion

    • What happens when you have to step out to the shops or something and the rest of the household is watching tv from the chromecast?

    Yes

  • If you live in an area that has pretty good coverage, it should work ok. As others have said experiment with the position/direction . If you live in a area without good coverage, it's really gonna be hit or miss. Good chance it won't work at all

  • It's a hit and miss depending on where the towers are and how close you are to them. It may work and you may need to adjust for different channels if they are not on the same tower.

If you own the place pay for an external antenna.
If you rent the place ask the agent to ask the landlord to put in an external antenna.

Sounds strange that there is no external antenna. I would double check and have a look in the roof cavity for an antenna (yes they were put int here in the 1950s and 1960s. The other thing to check is that the TV connection may be different to what you expect , so check for strange connectors and pull them off the wall (okay unscrew them/pop the cover off) and check the cable that is connected to it in case its the antenna.

This works fine enough for me considering the price. Sometimes some channels don’t work - I feel like it has to do with my neighbours downstairs as if I can hear them in the room below or works worse… but for $6 it’s great.

  • I bought the best one I could from Dick Smith a few year's ago. Used it probably twice as it was so poor. I wouldn't bother. Have you looked at the potential of getting a proper one installed and how much it might cost? Long term will be a much better solution. If that's not feasible I would just stream everything personally.

this website will give you an idea of coverage and your closest tower

  • Yes they work, some better than others, position is important, bad weather affects stability of the signal.

Strangely the best one ive ever had was a little one that came with a PC tv card. easily hidden, seemed to always get a reliable signal.

  • I live 14 km from the centre of Sydney, I have an antenna on my roof and I barely get signal. I tried an indoor antenna when I was messing around with a TV tuner for my Xbox and it got no signal at all. Same setup at a friends house and it worked fine.

Housing density, hills, etc etc etc etc will all affect it. I would suggest paying a bit more and getting one from Jaycar, they will let you take it back if it doesn't work and you haven't damaged it.

  • Depends where you live.

Eg; where I live now, they do not work well. We have tried 2 different amplified ones with poor results. Got a Chromecast instead.

Prior to that, many years ago, I lived only 1km away further up the hill and unamplified rabbit ears worked fine for me.

One set we bought from TGG and they allowed us to return it if it didn't work. Perhaps try something like that.

  • yep, they work..
picked one up from bunnings for $10 7 years ago n it's still going strong.
it's one of those semi larger bar type but i just hide it, not bothering me

i have moved around from far west to far east melbourne.. no problem.
maybe once or twice in a year, there's interference in the west but never had issue with east

  • Yes, get amplified with an power adaptor. Without sometimes SBS didn’t work on windy days

  • Use a good Quad shield cable. It makes a LOT of difference. Also, avoid bends in cable.
