  • Hi OP, between Risen 370 and Seraphim 370 which one is better? Is half cut cell panels superior that single cut?

    • As far as I could determine half cut cells are better in particular if you have trees in vicinity, i.e. a few cells get shaded per panel, as it is more tolerant voltage wise to shading.

  • Would someone be able to help this noob and compare this offer to the other one recently posted?

I'm just a mug punter who has recently shopped for solar (not an installer).

First I would say OzBargain is not the place I'd be shopping for solar on (unlike virtually anything else) as solar is not something you want to buy on the cheap. This is because although you can identify what the components are and so buy decent panels and inverter there are shortcuts that can be taken to achieve the cheap price which can be a problem down the track. The industry is rife with phoenix companies (here today and gone tomorrow, reborn the day after under a different name - voiding all warranties - at the very least the one on workmanship. I have no idea what this company is like. They may be fine.

Having said that although I'm not familiar with the panels offered, but I've found better ones have a full 25 year warranty (on level of output and product), keep stock of old product and have low deterioration rates (how much output drops by ageing). Of course you pay more for that over the ones with just a 10-12 year warranty and higher detonation rates.

Deterioration rates - generally 0.7 to 0.8% a year for the panels with 10-12 year warranties and 0.3% a year for the 25 year warranty panels.

Panels with a wattage lower than 330 watt are older stock and spec, 330-370 is mid range, 380 up are the higher range and I found not worth the premium they cost for the slight increase in output.

More important than the particular panel is the quality of the inverter and the Growatt in the other deal isn't great. There are better cheap inverters than that (if you're willing to go for a cheap inverter) Goodwe is one.

The deal on this page uses Solaredge which is not a conventional 'string inverter' like most systems use (and could arguably be considered simpler and more reliable because of that). Solaredge uses optimisers on each panel and a different kind of inverter. Some advantages of this are greater output, panel level monitoring, greater ability to handle shading.

Disadvantages are it seems to require a greater quality of installation so as not to have problems and I would only buy it from a Solaredge proven installer (which I am doing) and not on a 'cheap' deal and there is one detail of the Solaredge components spec'd here which show even me this installer doesn't know how to do Solaredge properly. It's something I've seen experienced quality Solaredge installers make note of in other deals. I'm not going to point it out except suffice to say it's back to school for this installer. It makes this a bad deal regardless of the price (or as well as the price).

You only need it (or the similar microinverter type system) if you have shading issues, lots of little different bits of roof, or want the fancy monitoring.

Otherwise you're probably better off putting the money into a quality brand string inverter (you can't go wrong with Fronius - they seem the Toyota of string inverters).

I would ask on Whirlpool forums or the Solar Q&A Aus/NZ Facebook group.

      • Well, thank for your insight! We are not fly by night companies and are operating since 2013. Our review speaks for itself. Have served many customers thru this portal. I don't see any reason why OZ bargain is not the place to shop for Solar!!

About the solar modules insight you have provided is partially correct. Do your home work well before posting.

About Fronius - well I can do Fronious Primo 5kw inverter cheaper than Solar Edge!! You are not comparing apples to apples!!

        • I did say I didn't know of your company. Except then I noticed the error in your system.

As a consumer I've done enough homework to spot that error. What does that tell us?

Yes I'd say Fronius should be cheaper than a Solaredge system (it was when I got quotes for both). Different fruits, but both quality - if installed correctly. Maybe stick to string inverters - they're not so difficult.

          • @wfdTamar: it's a bit harsh to neg the deal because you think you've spotted an error in their offer that you're not confident enough to mention.

This deal uses equipment that mitigates the reduction in power that occurs when parts of the arrays get shaded.

Without optimisers if even only a fraction of a panel is in the shade it will have a significantly reduced power output because of it AND the rest of the panels in the same array will also be reduced in output as if they too are shaded.

With optimisers the panels act independently and shade on one or more does not affect the power output of the remaining unshaded ones in the same array.

The equipment cost is higher but the idea is the reduction in power loss will pay for that.

      • Correct except better to say 'string' rather than array, as the string could be in the same array (pretty sure that's correct). Although it could be both a string and an array. Just semantics though at that level.

A string inverter might have 2-3 strings (string - a line of panels all connected together, then to the inverter) which may all be in the one array - typically a grid of panels on one bit of roof - though you could have a string on each bit of roof, each facing a different direction.

  • 25years Warranty, the longerst warranty I have ever seen IML.

    • +1

You do have to wonder about those long warranties - particularly the performance ones. How do you prove it? That's another advantage of the Solaredge system - if you keep panel output records you could possibly prove the case for lower output. If the company is still around that far on.

      • +1

Yeah, claiming on the performance warranty is extremely difficult because you need to prove the panel has degraded performance without being damaged/defective.

It's worth noting that the product warranty (pretty much the only panel warranty which matters) is only 15 years in this case, which is better than the 10/12 years offered by lower-end panels, but less than the 25 years offered by top-tier panels.

        • Also if the workmanship warranty is over you have to pay electricians rates to take it off the roof and test it - very likely more than the value of the panel, but if you just leave it there it can affect the whole string output. Unless you can remove it from the string. A gamble is claim is not paid or it's not under performing.

That is one thing this deal has going for it. Most I've seen is 7 years and a lot of 5 years. The 10 year warranty on workmanship is a long one (though that word leaves a lot of exceptions for minor component failure which may not be covered). I could see an issue where "the component failed, but it was connected up correctly, not covered by workmanship warranty. So that'll be $$$ thanks". (this is the same for all the installer companies).

Another thing with Solaredge is you can buy an extended warranty on the inverter to 25 years. (warranty on the monitoring box is 5 years I think).

I can't talk to this installer or the panels but I did get Solaredge with LG 325W panels a couple of years ago. I have a mixed north and west facing panel aspect and have shade caused by a large tree in the north-west corner of the house. I considered Fronius inverter with Tigo optimisers but eventually went with SolarEdge. I have had no issues, get really decent output and the SOlarEdge wifi/monitoring is really good. I would certainly give this deal a good hard look if I was in the market.

  • panel warranties are only good if they include costs of reinstall, otherwise they are not worth the paper they are written on. Imagine the costs of getting installer to uninstall your panel, ship it off to manufacturer for warranty claim, shipping back and reinstall? huawei inverter is an alternative for those wanting optimisers for shading without needing an optimiser on every panel.
