    I've just purchased a new 75inch tv for the living room. Would this be suitable to put behind to sync the colours?

    Also I have no other Hue products, can this work as a standalone without a bridge controller?

      No, you need a Sync Box which isn't available in Australia yet. Also very very pricey.

      You will need to buy a hue smart bridge for these lights.

      Note: Even this will not allow them to sync with your TV unless you're using your pc to do so and have the app installed on your pc.

      To sync with your xbox or UHD player or whatever you require another product which sells for $500 AUD at JB. It wasn't available in Australia until recently. https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/philips-hue-play-hdmi-syn…

      Even then, it will only work with HDR 10 and 4K at 60HZ, not dolby vision.

      Wait for gradient strip - JB Hifi have it exclusively. These will only project the left/right or up/down - whereas the light strip will do left, top and right with all individual addressable LEDS (better).

      You'll need a Hue Sync box ($400 odd) as well or run it from your PC.

        There's no question the new gradient strip would be better, but there's a couple of caveats:
        - it is hideously expensive right now, and probably will be for some time
        - not only that, it requires the sync box to work. It cannot be used as a standalone light that switches on without an A/V signal
        - the play bars might not be as vibrant as the gradient strip, but they can at least work as standalone hue lights via the bridge, and don't need the sync box to work.

        Incidentally, the gradient strip isn't individual LED addessable, it has seven separately addressable zones.

    So far as I know, this Hue Play can't play as a standalone ambient light. A Hue Bridge is required to make them work. Correct me if wrong.

          Nope. It's called bias lighting, and once you have it set up you'll never look back. I have this from the twin pack and absolutely love it.

        It's only an extra $20 if you buy two of the singles which is s till a pretty good deal. Add in the Echo Dot and a Philips Hue Dimmer Switch and it'll round out to $150. Sell the other two items if you don't want them and make a little coin on the side.

    Can someone explain what is the difference between base bar and the extension? If I need 10 light for my TV so I need to buy 1 base + 9 extension? Please correct me if I am wrong.

      As far as I've seen, the base version is essentially providing you a power supply, which supports up to 3 lights.

      Extensions don't come with power supply

    I bought these last time they were on sale. They’re underwhelming. I mostly have lifx and they’re much more vibrant. The Hue looks dull in comparison. I’m also not really sure what to do with these lights as they didn’t fit behind my wall mounted tv. I think a Lifx z light strip is a better buy for the back of a tv. I have a few of them around the house and they’re amazing.

      I found that I needed 3 of these lights to make it bright enough for me, interesting that the HUE Play dual pack power supply supports 3 bars… they know you need the extra one but want to extract more $$$ from you …. I am happy with the HUE Play though. I found that all LED light strips that I have tried eventually peel off the back of the TV and because my TV isn't wall mounted the HUE Play lights sit nicely hidden behind the TV.

    This is such a good deal with the add echo dot to the cart.

    Okay my play bars have arrived and I've put them in the back of the tv! Now what :P

    I probably should have listened to people here talking about having to buy the sync box - apart from that I saw in the instructions that you can download 3rd party apps that do a similar thing - I've downloaded hueDynamic which lets you sample some of its abilities, and then you have to pay to remove the timer limits on them. Any suggestions by anyone on which is the best app? Or are you all using the PC+hue sync app+TV method?

      Plug them into your PC, install the Hue Sync program, then start watching movies on your PC and playing games on your PC.

    This works quite well mounted behind my Xiaomi monitor, but there is a small dead zone in the middle. Hue Sync windows app works great but the mobile Hue app "entertainment area" is a bit fiddly.

    Overall, very happy it all came quickly (less than 24 hours, and also managed to sell the Echo for $40 making total spend $93 for two light bars. Thanks OP!

      I checked and got the same amount before i decided to put it up for sale. You should easily get $35 if you sold it so no reason to send it back for refund.
